Hey, not Jen , but I wanted to mention that even Erie does the "tank top" style cast like SLC does if the apex of the curve demands it. It just depends on where the apex is. 's little Cole had a tank top style cast for his first one, but was able to move to a under the arm cast for his second casting.

I don't know if SLC ever does it without the shoulder straps or not. I think each doc has their own style. All I know is that Dr. Khoury told me that Ian didn't need the shoulder straps because of where the apex of his curve was. I know I was surprised because I didn't realize they ever even did the straps...I thought the straps where just a doc's particular style, but apparently it does have something to do with the curve. I *think* Mehta always does the straps, but don't quote me because I could be wrong about that. And, I believe Mehta may have been the one to do Cole's first cast, but you will have to double check that with .

I haven't had a chance to try adding my info to the spreadsheet yet...off to do that now. Thanks again for figuring this out for me.

Re: cast and carseat

Well when SLC termed their casts Risser cast I asked if they're meaning they go over the shoulder & they said yes they explained the material & that they're over the shoulder. I don't think I asked if they ever do any just torso only, do you know of anybody here that has just the torso casted in SLC? When I talked to Erie they said that the smaller table does allow them to get better correction so it's easier to apply a cast on just the torso. I'm hoping that the fact she's already in one & @ such a minor degree that they'll be able to pick it up from there with just casting the torso. But Dr. is going to review her before and after x-rays and give a consult. on her case so I'm sure I'll talk with him about it then. I like the idea of having Dr. working with her too & I like their equipment better.. so we'll see if it's possible for her I guess! Were you able to save your info. to the spreadsheet? If I'm not mistaken, adding your username allows an e-mail to be sent to the address you used to register where you can access the sheet w/the save/edit option. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they don't have to an over the shoulder cast for you.

Yeah, I so hope he's able to do it w/out, I hate that she can barely turn her head like a normal little kid, she just has to look out the corner of her eyes & turn all the way if she decides to.. as cute as the little look is, if it's possible to get great/maximum correction w/less cast I'm all for it! I really hope that's the case.Oh yeah, once it works for you, or somebody, then we'll know the steps & can confirm the directions are right.. and hopefully get as good of a list going as there are active users here! I don't have pics posted...she is on the banner (2nd one) for the ISOP home page though....we used to go to SLC....for all intents and purposes though, (not what is endorsed by ANYONE, not , not ISOP, Shriner's, CASTS, ANYONE) she is cured/completely corrected. She wore her casts for 15 months and followed up with a TLSO 23.5 hrs/day for one month, 22 hrs/day for one month, 20 hrs/day for 3 months and is currently being weaned completely off. She started out with COBB, RVAD, and rotation all exceeding 50 degrees, with some wedging. This process when all is said and done will have taken 2 years to the exact day. She was first casted when she was 8 months old. This is the quick run down on her story. I know is working on getting it posted on ISOP. If you haven't visited please do, it has TONS of info www.infantilescoliosis.org . I will be more than happy to speak to

anyone and answer questions to the best of my ability. You may reachme at 325-651-9160. I live in west TX (cent) time zone. Please don't call me before 0800 or after 2100 my time. Madison still doesn't sleep through the night and she gets very cranky when awakened before 0800 and my husband is in the military and therefore goes to bed very early. Hope this helps you and any new comers out. Jenmosunshinebaby <mosunshinebaby@...> wrote: Jen , do you go to SLC? Do you have pictures posted of your cast? Just wanted to send a reminder....these casts don't only correct curves, but rotation too. Dr. D'Astous and Dr. are both applying EDF casts. Don't forget this HAS to be a total body approach. I still continue to have Madison's pulm function and renal process monitored. Both were affected by her scoli. She has pulm and radio appts Fri. in Dallas. (the town we live in is too small to have equipment to do scoli x-rays) I should be able to give everyone updates then. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Evanlee's first cast at 4 months had the shoulder straps but after 2 weeks they had to cut them off. There was too much rubbing against her ears and her ears kept folding over and getting stuck. They did cut away a bit for this when the cast was first applied but she ended up with sores on her ears anyway. The 2 casts she has had since have been torso only, and we were told she was able to get that due to where her curve is. They also said they made alot of correction with the first cast and I guess that is why they may have tried the shoulder straps too. I am happy to report that now on the 3rd cast she has gone from her original 38 degrees to less than 5. The x-ray looks amazing. She has been molded for a TLSO brace which she will be put in next for the spring and summer. Hopefully she holds in the brace the correction that has been made. I know that she has to have these casts and that is what is best for her,

however after 5 months of casting I will be glad for her to go into a brace. , mom to Evanlee & is (9 months)mosunshinebaby <mosunshinebaby@...> wrote: Yeah, I so hope he's able to do it w/out, I hate that she can barely turn her head like a normal little kid, she just has to look out the corner of her eyes & turn all the way if she decides to.. as cute as the little look is, if it's possible to get great/maximum correction w/less cast I'm all for it! Newbie here,

What is the url for the ISOP website. My

9 month old daughter was just diagnosed with infantile scoliosis. We are going

to Dr. D’Astous at Shriners in SLC. She has a 35 degree curve and was

fitted for a brace that we’ll get on Wednesday. I am reading all I can

and from what I am reading is seems that we are in good hands.

Hoping to learn more as we go. Any tips

would be appreciated..

No, he recommended casting, which we’ll

do in the next couple of months, but I asked if a brace would be good to start

with instead of going straight to casting. At the time I hadn’t read

anything about infantile scoliosis so I didn’t know better. What are

your thoughts on this , should we have skipped the brace and waited for the

casting? She is scheduled for an MRI on Mar 17th to rule out a

tethered spinal cord. I suspect that the casting will begin soon after that.

I think having the brace until she can be casted is fine. It will hopefully keep her from getting any worse until she can be casted. Anything you can do to prevent her from worsening until she can get her MRI and casting done is a good thing!

Newbie here,

What is the url for the ISOP website. My 9 month old daughter was just diagnosed with infantile scoliosis. We are going to Dr. D’Astous at Shriners in SLC. She has a 35 degree curve and was fitted for a brace that we’ll get on Wednesday. I am reading all I can and from what I am reading is seems that we are in good hands.

Hoping to learn more as we go. Any tips would be appreciated..

in Provo.

That makes me feel better about suggesting

bracing. Thanks for the well wishes. Any tips on living with a brace on a

baby? I’ve been thinking, when you have a (breastfeeding) baby in cast,

what do you do if there is a diaper explosion that often makes it’s way

right up the back??? Just curious..

Hi , I think it's good

that you have the brace until she's

casted, I wish I had b/c my daughter jumped from

28 degree to 50 in

2 mos. If there was going to be any kind of

wait for her casting

then it's definitely good she's being held till

then! Good luck!!

Sounds like a great system, when we get

to that point, I’ll give it a try.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Subject: Re:

cast and carseat

I've haven't had a brace at

all yet so I'm not sure about that.

Everyone seems to figure out their own good

diapering technique for

braces/casts, I was worried about that at first

but I figured out a

great thing that works well for us. My

situation is a little more

difficult even b/c this particular cast she's in

goes around one leg

too. But I haven't once had it go up the

back of the cast or down

the leg yet and we've had some pretty bad (badly

soiled) ones since

she's been in it. I buy large quantities of

those big absorbant

cotton squares (like you get to remove make-up

with or something

like that). And I fold the end of one (to

form a cup like barrier)

and wedge it in between the back of the cast and

skin with my

fingers so it's a nice snug/tight fit, and then I

fold the rest up

over the cast and lay her down on her diaper like

that. I follow

that sequence all the way around her leg, (I guess

in your case it

would be her front waist and lower back. But

it works perfect, the

cotton stops/absorbs anything from going up the

cast, and mostly

even from soiling any other parts of the cast

because it's all

covered by the cotton. Her cast is still in

great shape & I change

the water proof tape out often that covers the

surround diapering

area. I was worried from hearing stories of

it getting smelly and

such but with doing that diapering technique &

powdering the water

proof tape after I clean it inside and out, she

doesn't smell at all

(yet anyway) ;-) I've read people suggesting

maxi pads too which

you might try, I tried that and they didn't work

to well, they were

too thick (even just liners) and difficult to work

with b/c of their

size. I even use toilet paper & repeat

all the above steps with her

when I run out of the cotton before I have a

chance to get more. It

works well too in stopping anything from going up,

just not quite as

absorbant & easy to work with as the cotton

pads. So that's what I

do, maybe it'll help.. Take care! -Joy

,

I use Pampers Cruisers (because of the stretchy tabs) and tuck the diaper up the front and back of the cast. I haven't had too many problems other than when Ian had the rotavirus!
