Thank you all for your feedback on my questions about gout and KT. I

have printed out each message to give to my friend. Hopefully they

will ease her mind a bit. Unfortunately she doesn't have a computer

and she doesn't even make her own tea, I do! She can't bring herself

to touch the culture which I think is a bit silly, but then, to each

his own. I happen to like touching them:o) And considering how

beneficial they are to the skin, it makes it even better.

I also went to the Earth Clinic Web site and printed out what it

said about gout. I know of too many people who suffer from this

affliction and am trying to get all of them on the KT but for some

it's difficult to come out of their comfort zone (which is doctors)

and try it.

Thanks again, you are a wonderful group and one of the best things

that has happened in my life. I hope I can always put my 2 cents in

and help you also.

Sincerely,

Judy

I asked this question a while back for my dad. I got a great response from Ilanit (Where is she? I miss her!).

Search Gout and the thread should come up.

Also- make sure that the Dr aspirates fluid from your actual foot to test for high uric acid. High uric acid present on a blood panel is NOT sufficient. I was misdiagnosed w/ gout as such the dr. refused to draw fluid from my foot! What I really had was osteopenia a triple fractured/swollen foot!!!!!! Unless you know for sure, demand the aspiration test! -MattSent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryFrom: julev Date: Mon, 24 Aug 2009 09:27:29 -0400antonio massa di galugnano<massadigalugnano@...>; new lipidlist< >Subject: Re: Gout gout is associated with HIV and also with aging & hyperlipidemia and diet. Griffiths was talking to me about this - ask her specifically

if she doesn't see this thread. But I think she was saying that

there is a connection with lead, with thyroid and with iodine

deficiency. Check with her though,

Best of luck for your husband's recovery,

I'll back the cherries too. My dh keeps his gout at bay by eating about 20

cherries twice a week and a few extra as and when he feels a twinge. He drinks

beer and eats red meat.

We get the cherries when they're at lowest prices or free (about now) and store

them in the freezer for the year. I've also heard that cherry juice, capsules

etc work well too but we've not tried them.

Hello All-

I have been seeing more patients lately who have developed gout after surgery.

Does anyone know if there is any relationship btw having the surgery and the development of gout?

He has been adhering to the diet very closely, but his symptoms appear much worse.

Besides monitoring purines in the diet, is there anything else diet wise that I could be recommending?

Thank you,

LaFleur RD, LD

: We saw a lot of this too and one of our physicians suggested we draw uric acid levels pre-op and treat with meds if high, this has lessened the amount of gout I see. May want to discuss with you team. I also have a patient who has developed Gout after surgery. I am having him

follow a low-purine diet, but it is not helping. Any suggestions would be

appreciated!

Gout can occur before or after WLS due to the low-carb nature of the diet. I

don't have my notes in front of me, but from what I recall, the body can start

forming ketones which compete with uric acid for reabsorption and causes the

uric acid to build up.

We learned about this in the Training in Adult Weight Management course so if

anyone who attended has their notes and can elaborate, feel free to do so.

So depending on their stage, increasing the carb intake could help. Otherwise

for protein foods, dairy is low in purines.
