Guest guest
We find that it's an individual effort for each pt to figure out what works for them in keeping their calories between 1200-1400 cal/day. I doubt there's any research out there that proves that it matters HOW they do this (other than planning). It's more important to discern whether or not the snacking is planned (ideally) or UNPLANNED, as the unplanned snacking is more likely contributing to the excess calories. We tend to encourage high protein snacks -esp for the early out pts, but fruit can be fine to as long as the pt is getting enough protein and that the fruit satisfies their hunger, regardless of how far out they are from surgery. Our Physician here has said we need to stick to 4 meals a day and snacking has been shown to increase weight post op. I have only seen papers saying that with snacks containing more than 150kcal, which is obviously things we do not suggest! I have found that patients need a little something ie fruit/ fat free yogurt mid morning and mid pm to help get through the day (which is less than 150kcal!). What is everyone else doing in practice?
