Hi There,

I have a pre-op patient who was assessed today and she is allergic to milk, eggs

and soy. She also dislikes fish, beef and pork.

We use Optifast as a pre-op diet in our program which contains milk proteins and

soybean oil. In the past we have given people who cannot tolerate Optifast due

to milk allergy a 900kcal protein-sparing diet but this will be difficult with

this patient due to her allergies and food preferences. We will face similar

challenges meeting protein needs after surgery as all the protein supplements we

recommend contain milk or soy protein and she only eats a few dietary sources of

protein (chicken and nuts).

Does anyone know of any protein supplements that would be appropriate for

someone with these allergies?

Thanks

The Pea based products like Figure 8 are made from field peas. She may or may not be sensitive to field peas since she is allergic to soy. Hemp based products are not complete proteins, but have a PDCAAS of around 60%. There are some complete collagen based products too. The Healthy Shots and ProStat Profile have PDCAAS= 100%. These are made from animal skin. Cordially, Litchford PhD, RD, LDNwww.casesoftware.commdlphd@...Check out the 2010 edition of Laboratory

Sorry I can not tell you the name of it but there is a hemp based protein shake that I see at one of our local natural food stores. She could mix that with almond or rice milk for additional protein post-op. There are also coconut yogurts she may be able to take in (not sure on residual milk/soy/egg proteins in any of these). Hope she realizes she will be eating a lot of chicken and nuts!

best of luck

So the product doesn't have a PDCAAS of 100?

And ProStat's score is actually 100% though from collagen?

I have yet to look into this personally, but have heard a few positive things with respect to the supplement product line entitled “Vega.â€Â  It might be worth an investigation!  I hope I haven’t sent you on a wild goose chase!!!I look forward to hearing what you decide on being the optimal management for this individual.
