Bariatric surgery is proving to be an effective treatment for adolescent obesity. As this is a fairly new procedure for adolescents, practitioners need to be trained in a team-approach to bariatric surgery. This webinar will present an overview of adolescent bariatric surgery and specifically focus on the nutritional aspects of the preoperative treatment phase, postoperative dietary management and available resources. About the Presenter: Kathleen B. Hrovat, MS, RD, LD has over 35 years of experience in the field of clinical nutrition and dietetics. She served as the Lead Nutritionist for the Women's Health Initiative Study at the University of Cincinnati site (1994-2004). In 2004 she joined the Comprehensive Weight Management Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, serving as a clinical dietitian in both the HealthWorks! weight management program and the bariatric surgical program. In July of 2008 she accepted the position as the Lead Nutritionist with the Surgical Weight Loss Program for Adolescents in the division of Pediatric Surgery. She also serves as the bariatric program manager for DSIOP (Disease Specific Innovations and Outcomes Program) at CCHMC. Learning Objectives: Recognize evidence based research demonstrating the outcomes and efficacy of bariatric surgery in promoting short-term and long term weight loss. Describe the initial assessment of the adolescent bariatric surgery candidate, the dietary and weight loss goals pre-operatively and tactical plan to achieve goals. Identify dietary issues and behavioral strategies to consider post-operatively when counseling adolescents who have undergone weight loss surgery.
