Just curious, how is everyone handling all pt ?s this week from the headlines last week " calcium supplements cause heart attacks " . We have gotten 4 pts in office and 3 phone calls on it so far this week. We read the study earlier in the week, drew our own conclusions, and have advised accordingly. Just wondering what others think about this.

It’s seems to me from reading one article that sighted the study, that the increase of heart attach was found in post-menopausal women

around the age of 72. The calcium supplement given to them did not include vitamin D either. Our patients take calcium supplements that include vitamin D, which is heart protective. I told our patients that I would look into this further, but told them

to continue with their calcium supplementation unless otherwise advised by their primary care physician.

Anyone else have a better understanding of this study?

Thank you,

I knew this was going to cause probs. I've explained to my pt's that this info released is just a correlation; a similarity. Does not mean 'yes ca supps cause heart attacks.' There is a stronger PROOF that lack of ca absorption, as seen in our post op pts, causes metastatic bone dz. It makes me so mad when the news puts out this kind of info. Our population, esp us in the northern hemisphere, is already at risk for bone dz. So now q one wants to stop taking ca. Ugh! I'm glad others see this as a huge issue! I have a hard enough time promoting supps! Now the national news has to do this! Ban together bariatric RD's! We know what's best for our pt's!
