Guest guest
I have had a call from a person who would like to have an appointment with me for diet instruction. She had a sleeve gastrectomy done in Mexico. Our practice does not perform this surgery and I am not very familiar with it, which I told her. There is no one in our area to refer her to and she is still requesting to meet with me. Can anyone direct me to some good literature that I can read through about post-op diet for sleeves? I am thinking that it would be similar to a post-op diet for bands. Do those with sleeves need to avoid liquids before and after meals? Any information would be appreciated. Guest guest
: We have just started doing sleeves and in the 4-5 that I have seen and from what I have read they seem a bit more like gastric bypass in restriction level and diet advancement. Although an important thing I learned is that not all sleeves are the same, there are different size sleeves and this can make a big difference in food tolerance and portions. Sleeve patients have told me that their drinking is really slow, even 3-4 months out, appears to me to be that they need to drink much slower even than bypass folks. They would need to avoid eating/drinking together just for the ability to eat enough, although our sleeves may be made smaller than what your patient has. I hope RD's with more sleeve experience will reply with some experience based information as I am still learning the nuances of sleeve eating too! Best of luck.
