Hi Docs,

We’ve been flirting with the idea of getting out of the Paper record era. Obviously this is something I’m a little hesitant to do because of the perceived headache that it may incur. I was looking for other doctor’s opinions on the matter. I’d like to hear stories of horror or bliss. I’d really appreciate your experience good or bad with various companies as well. I feel that choosing the right company is most likely key to the success of the venture.

So, when ya have the time, I’d really appreciate your input.

many thanks,

ph Medlin D.C.

Dr. Medlin,We made the transition in Jan 2011. We chose Medicfusion because of recommendations, price structure, support, web-based accessibility. It was a definite learning curve. I had about 3-4 weeks of absolute misery with the transition. It was taking me a VERY long time to complete my notes on the new electronic system. Needless to say, I got through it and became more and more efficient. I will say that my notes are much better now. It does take me a bit LONGER to complete a note than it did previously, but it is much higher in quality. We tried to go completely paperless and found it to be too difficult. Most of the difficulty was with patient compliance - imagine trying to get a new patient to fill out all their pertinent health information via the web after we email them a PIN# to set up their electronic patient portal - sounds easy enough, but major lack of people getting it done before coming in for their first visit. So now we use paper for initial paperwork and subjective measures (Oswestry, FRI, etc.) and I document all my notes and exams electronically. This works for us. Our billing system changed with the transition too. Autumn 8 is partnered with Medicfusion to provide the optional billing system. This was a biggie for us. Lots of extra work due to some weak personnel, but now it is now getting up to speed very nicely. Our collections are improving with the new system. Also, the new system eliminates the need for paper fee slips, which cuts down on the need to pay someone for data entry.Another cool thing is that I can access Medicfusion from any internet connection device (laptop, iPhone, iPad). Checking my schedule and accessing patient data has never been easier.Nothing against older employees, but we also found the transition to an electronic system VERY difficult and slow for 2 staff members who are in their mid 50's. One of them, our receptionist, ended up leaving. We hired a young woman in her 20's who is like lightning on the system. So there is definitely a computer and technology skill set that needs to be taken into account with your staff.I would give the transition process a rating of 5/10 - some of it I want to forget.I would give Medicfusion an 8/10 - there are some little things that could be better, every system will have them.I'm happy that we made the change when we did. It will solve many of the potential headaches I see coming down the road with new billing and coding changes as our healthcare system continues to evolve.Jamey Dyson, DC On Oct 27, 2011, at 2:08 PM, ph Medlin wrote:
