Portland: Monday, Oct. 10, 6-8 p.m.

University Place Hotel & Conference Center

310 S.W. Lincoln St.

Portland, OR 97201

Get this to 2 friends and ask them to do the same.

I am skipping gym hockey to go to this. Now that’s sacrifice!

I am bringing several copies of the article that Randy Hewitt sent me:

http://www.chiroaccess.com/Articles/Zen-and-The-Art-of-Chiropractic-Maintenance--An-Inquiry-Into-Healthcare-Values.aspx?id=0000296

Printed on one page, colored paper.

Will hand it out to everyone I see.

Please bring an entertaining, factual, uplifting, short, article printed on one page with a website to get to it.

I tell people what Vern says below; the Oregon Health plan tried to help people in crisis but helping people learn to move toward wellness is more cost effective.

It cuts across party lines in that it supports both progressive and conservative beliefs in helping people care for themselves and become more self reliant.

Dress up. Leave your inner Bohemian at home.

We shouldn’t worry as much about being understood as much as making sure that we are pleasant, confident, and likeable.

Subject: FW: Sept. 30, 2011 - Get involved! Community meetings on new vision for Oregon Health Plan

Dear colleagues,

We now have the meeting locals (list below) for the Eugene and Bend meetings…only one we don’t have is Astoria but I will post that as soon as I get it……..Bend you have over 70 doctors fill the room bring some patients Dr. Coby Hanes please do your network thing over there and get bodies to the Bend meeting!  My sister Pat who is a nurse in Bend is going to rally some of her nurses to support us CAM providers as well……Eugene Dr. Kierstyn “Sunny” get Matt and Sheryl and her crew……talk about your history as a nurse and the nonsensical medical model and its drugs, drugs, and more drugs approach and your movement away from that model and why etc., etc.  Ok below some suggested talking points to get you thinking….

Why “Coordinated Care Organizations” must not discriminate against CAM providers:

· Oregonians must have the choice to seek care from CAM providers, such as chiropractic and naturopathic physicians and licensed acupuncturists.

· “Chiropractic” is not a “service” it is a profession and chiropractic physicians have the clinical skills sets to work as primary care providers for those who wish to practice to the top of their licensure.  As such chiropractic and naturopathic physicians can help fill the PCP gap.

· Low back pain is an epidemic and spinal manipulation has more high level clinical trials supporting its efficacy than any other known medical intervention and without the adverse events of pharmacology not the least of which are the opioid narcotics.  And…chiropractic physicians provide 94% of all spinal manipulation in this country because we are the best trained to do so.

· “Prevention” is more than simple screenings to doctors of chiropractic and naturopaths.  To these providers true prevention is instructing Oregonians in lay terms they can understand not just the why but the how to get started making positive lifestyle changes how to, “eat well,” “move well,” and “think well.”  We focus on pushing our patients toward optimum health a state of wellness so they are less likely to fall prey to acute and chronic illness in the first darn place, that to us is true “prevention.”

· The chiropractic profession has been coaching and speaking of wellness for decades well before the term “wellness” became fashionable in medicine.

· If we are to have any chance of achieving the Governor’s “Triple Aim,” 1. Improve the health of a defined population. 2.  Reduce the per capita cost of health care.  3. Improve patient satisfaction and safety Oregon must move away from the current medical model of health care with its over-reliance on pharmacology.

· There are so many evidence based natural less toxic natural remedies that work and so many drugs that don’t we need the CAM providers included in these CCOs.

· As of 2011 more Americans die secondary to prescription drugs than from auto accidents its time for a change and CAM providers can help make that change.

· Oregon leads the nation in spinal surgeries per capita and Bend, Oregon is tops in the nation for spinal surgeries per capita.  Oregon also ranks third in the nation for prescription narcotic abuse.  According to the State of Oregon statistics between 1997-2007 there were 700 deaths due to prescription opioid narcotics alone its way past time to include the natural care providers.

· If we are serious about moving away from Oregon’s current crisis care model of health care and it’s over-reliance on pharmacology CAM providers must be included in Oregon’s Coordinated Care Organizations.

· CCOs must not discriminate against any health care provider acting within their scope, licensure, or certification.

NOW GO GET’EM!

To The Continued Good Fight!

Subject: Sept. 30, 2011 - Get involved! Community meetings on new vision for Oregon Health Plan

Please join the Oregon Health Authority for a community meeting about coming changes to the Oregon Health Plan. Under bipartisan legislation passed earlier this year, state lawmakers set a vision for local Coordinated Care Organizations with a goal of better health, better care and lower costs.

This vision was driven by the fact our current health care system is unsustainable. Costs are increasing, while the payment and organizational systems too often get in the way of better health.

Under the legislation, local Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs) would be responsible for administering the delivery of physical, mental, addictions, oral and other health care to the more than 600,000 child and adult Oregonians served by the Oregon Health Plan. These organizations would be given flexibility and incentives for care that keeps people healthier, including health equity, preventive services and team-based care for chronic illnesses. Under House Bill 3650, a final proposal for such organizations will be delivered to the February 2012 Legislature by the Oregon Health Policy Board. Pending approval, the first CCO would launch in 2012. Currently, four work groups made up of 133 people from around the state are meeting monthly to help inform the plan for CCOs.
