Guest guest
The full study is available here: http://www.annals.org/content/156/1_Part_1/1.full.pdf+html I would have liked to see a group who received chiropractic care AND were instructed in home exercise. If you think about it, the chiro group only received 12 weeks of care. The exercise group learned the exercises and most likely continued using them as a self-treatment for any recurring neck pain over the entire 52 weeks. It would have also been nice to see a group receive treatment every 2 or 3 weeks for the duration of the 52 week period (maintenance care). Overall, I like this study. We need more of these from our institutions... bravo! This study highlights the power of chiropractic care and simple spinal range of motion exercises in improving spinal function. When it comes to cost-effectiveness... the exercises win by a landslide. What does that say about what we are doing and recommending for our patients? Shouldn't we be trying to help people get healthier with the least amount of cost to them? Hmmm. I give similar exercises to all my patients. Some will do them, some won't. The study did show that there was higher patient satisfaction with chiro care over the exercise group... people like to be cared for and touched. Another thing I like about the study is that is showed about 30% of chiro and exercise participants had aggravation of their neck pain symptoms compared to the medication group who had zero. This is important for educating patients... " yes, you can just take pain pills, but long-term you will most likely do worse. However, if we do chiropractic care and exercise you might have little soreness from the treatment, but the long-term result is going to be much better. " Thanks for forwarding this! Hmmm. After over a decade of empirically and clinically studying active care exercise and patient responses, it has become clear that until chiropractic has an active care protocol similar to dentistry's brushing of teeth, the profession will not achieve it's fruitful maturity, and patients will continue to struggle without knowledge of their own innate intelligence for self-healing.In this regard, at this point, I would consider the consciousness of our relaxed relationship to gravity, our posture in gravity, in every moment, to be the most critical component of that emerging active care protocol. Patients will always need passive chiropractic care, but understanding who they are in gravity moment-to-moment will usher us all into the future of health care, IMHO.
