I am treating a 42 yo female mother of three who was involved in a moderate whiplash in June. Neck pain complaints have reduced well , but twice in the last month she has been to the ER with racing heart beat that came on after she felt a "crick in the neck" . She is now on a trial of 4 cardiac meds and off work from her admin. asst job this week due to the heart rate problem. These meds make her feel like she is "stuck in mud".

What's going on here? I plan to take a cervical motion series xrays today. I haven't treated her since late August due to her busy schedule. R Johansen D.C. PC,DABCOChiropractic Life Center12762 SE Stark StreetPortland Oregon 97233Voice 5032557746,Fax 5032550818

Hi Ron, At the risk of sounding simplistic: C 3,4,5 keep the diaphragm alive ....look to the hiatal hernia influence: it can crowd the heart superiorily, crowding the neural plexus of T3 - C3, setting off the heart pacer when the neck gets appropriately positionally crimped ..... If she is emotionally strong enough, teach her to do a deep cough when this occurs and the meds will most likely not be needed .... then all you have to do is convince the MDs of that. Funny (...or not)

I had the exact same symptoms related to an accident--heart racing and a feeling of pressure over the sternum.

TRUE STORY:

I went to an 'out of the box' DO (pony tail, Birkenstocks) who never 'examined' me, as in put his hands on me. He was concerned that I might be having a heart attack, so he sent me to the hospital for tests--Chest X-ray, Echocardiogram, Thalium Stress Test, etc etc, and had me wear a King-of-Hearts monitor 24-7 for 2 weeks.

At the end of 2 weeks, I returned to his office after he had reviews all the testing results.

He began by telling me he was going to write me an Rx for Beta Blockers.

Why, I said, what is my diagnosis?

Tachycardia.

That's not a diagnosis, that's a symptom. What exactly are you treating??

(Silence)

OK, then let's try an anti-depressant.

An ANTI-DEPRESSANT? I'm not depressed! Why would I want to take an anti-depressant.

(another moment of silence, after which he handed me the Rx)

I told him I was going 'back to my roots' and would seek some CHIROPRACTIC care.

When I saw my chiropractor, he said "Ann, you were in all of my classes and you got me through medical school--you were smarter than me. What do you know about C3-4-5?

C3-4-5 keeps the diaphragm alive. Hmmm.

So he adjusted C3-4-5. By that night, the sternal pressure had stopped completely.

Went back for a second visit--C3-4-5 adjusted. By the next morning, no more racing heart.

So, my friends, I made a 'follow up' appointment with the DO.

All of my symptoms have resolved.

Oh, really, so the anti-depressant worked! (Big smile on his face)

No. I never filled the Rx. Instead I had 2 chiropractic appointments. 2 adjustments at C3-4-5 adjusted and all my symptoms resolved.

Oh, he said. If you responded well to adjustments, I'm a craniosacral specialist. I recommend 6 CS sessions. Should really help.

No thank you, I replied. You had your chance and could have offered that to me even while you waited for the results of all that expensive, high tech testing you put me through. You are fired. And furthermore, the only reason I returned is to remind you to go back to your roots. You studied manual manipulation and other 'out of the box' techniques. BUT YOU NEVER PUT YOUR HANDS ON ME. Next time, trust your training and use your hands.

The end. (She was smiling as she left his office...)

Cart racing is dangerous.

It’s not surprising that someone would have whiplash associated with cart racing.

It just had to be said.

--

Seriously though, that’s going to be the trouble with evidence based best practices.

No one will teach whippersnappers that it can’t hurt to adjust NOT TO TREAT TACHYCARDIA but to normalize the motion of the cervical vertebraes in hopes that the body’s adaptive response to some stressor will abate.

Sticky issue when we try to bill insurance for “trying” something. On the other hand, trying Methotrexate for random joint pain or SSRI’s for tachycardia? Sold.

In the long run, Ron, it may be good to strengthen the c-spine muscles to give more stability to the joints. I made headbands that hold weights for doing neck extension exercises. Got one endodontist using it. Works great!

Ha! now that's a great story...trouble is Ann going back to his "roots" would assume he took the 150 hr elective course in spinal manipulation while in osteopathic school! You know the procedure we spend on average 1000 hrs on in chiropractic school and are not worth poop until about our 5th year in practice several hundred adjustments later and several thousand hours much later.....

thanks for to story...loved it...Vern Saboe

Watching this kind of scenario over my years of nursing is what makes me such an avid and passionate chiropractor .... well, that and all the results we get, that is. But it was that continuous testing and no treatment stuff that is so crazy-making. I so love being a chiropractor.
