Guest guest
Now concerning preservatives for water based, and lipid emulsions. The only truly natural perservative I have found that is broad spectrum (mold and bacterial) is an herbal extract called Suprapien, it's main component is oregano and imparts a very strong herbal scent. It has been tested and it works. I have not been able to over come the issue of the strong scent, but you may try ho leaf (not ho bark) which is %75 linalool to create a lavender scent. I have not tried it yet as the thought of using it is recent. Hi Debra, I have tried Suprapien in my lotions as I wanted a natural preservative. Apart from the strong scent, I would use it only in my unscented lotions because of the fact it would morph my essential oil blends. In testing the shelf life of my lotions I found it would only be a max of 6 months. After that, the preservative would no longer work. They would start to mold. I quit using Suprapein as my preservative because I would not feel safe selling my lotions with this preservative. I went back to using my normal paraben/formaldyhyde free preservatives that I could trust better. Z. can toss in her 2 cents about her hair conditioner preservative experiment with the piens!
