RE: Vit D dosage?

Because they can! And 1x/week is more convenient. Problem is they are probably prescribing D2 -- ergocalciferol, which is not what we make. D2 is maybe 60% as active as D3 (cholecalciferol) and apparently is not stored in the fat like D3; as soon as they stop the regimen their levels will plummet (unless they are getting sun exposure). Taking a large dose of D3 1x/week wouldn't be bad (it would be stored), but D3 would be the proper choice. I have read somewhere that you don't start to store until you are getting over 7000 IU/day either from production or supplementation or combo, and that you probably are not storing until your levels get above 50 ng/ml. I treat alot of Kaiser Pharmacy techs. They are telling me they are seeing alot of scrip for Vit D 50,000 unit once a week. Can any body tell me the rationale for this dosage vs a daily regimen of a smaller dose? R Johansen D.C.
