Guest guest
Hi Larry, The chicken poz vaccine is the "shingles vaccine". Shingles is the adult form of chicken pox, and I have had both. If you've ever had chicken pox, then the virus will always be with you, and shingles very well could happen. For me, it happens under stressful situations. I'm not sure if the chicken pox vaccine is a live virus or not, but I personally can't take a live virus vaccination under any circumstance, but this may be an option if you've never had chicken pox as a kid. Ask your RN if it's a live vaccine or not. Thankfully there are very effective meds to help with shingles, like zovirax. lsmyle@... wrote: Hey guys, Is there any information regarding the shingles vaccine and if it's recommended for HIV+'s? Guest guest
I asked my doctor about the shingles vaccine, and he told me that it was a live virus not recommended for HIV+ patients.

Guest guest
If you have had two bouts of shingles, you should be on continuous prophilaxys with Famvir or acyclovir. You run the risk of HIV activation every time you have a flare up! I failed Isentress due to a herpes flare up. I am currently in my second bout of shingles and when I asked my doc about getting the vaccine I was told no. She said that Kaiser would not give the vaccine to any of their HIV patients due to the fact that it is a live vaccine and could have a very bad outcome with an impaired immune system. Just thought I would ask around. I really don't want to go through this again and was hoping the vaccine would be available. Guest guest
Hello: I also have Kaiser, and I was allowed to get the shingles vaccine. My HIV doc based it on the fact that my CD4 count is high, at 1108 and my viral load is undetectable. He said there is little chance that I would get shingles from the vaccine. I don't know what the cutoff is, but you might try approaching your doctor again if your numbers are good.Jay in Denver
