Hi all,

fixative... or is that a stupid question?

Thanks in advance!

Hi MArilou

a carrier oil is an oil to dilute fragrances or actives, whereas a fixative can

be an oil or another ingredient which makes the fragrance last longer, You could

have the same fragrance in 2 systems at the same concentration and in the same

carrier oil, but the system with the carrier oil will perform with a longer

lasting fragrance.

Happy blending

HI Marilou,

Simply put, the carrier is the material you dilute the

essences in to apply it to the skin. In perfumery, it

can be (usually) oil or alcohol. A fixative is

something which helps to make the scent last longer.

In NP we typically use certain base notes like benzoin

and peru balsam to help fix the scent. There are other

tricks too for fixing the scent which you can look up

in the Messages page by using the search word

" fixatives " . Using oil as a carrier itself will make

the scent last longer, but it dampens the perfume and

you give up the effusiveness that an alcohol base

would provide.

Hope this makes sense and is helpful to you.

Patty

Gee! Thanks Barbara and Patty for answering so quickly and clearly!

Actually i did go and make a search with " fixative " as a key-word...

there were more than 400 answers. After reading the first 40 or so, i

was a bit desperate, hence my question. ;-)

Thanks a lot, and happy weekend to all!
