I have a new pt coming in that has cervical dystonia and is just switching

chiros. Sometimes she get Botox injections, which help, and she said the chiro

care helps.

I am wondering if you have found there to be specific nutritional deficiencies

in these pts. Or does anyone else have any clinical pearls to share about this

diagnosis?

Thanks!

Dr. Chandler,

I have seen this condition with other syndromes. Porphyria. An interesting and more rare condition that will also make the patient very intolerant of medications. Meds actually worsen the dystonia. I've seen it with severe viral infections, New borns. You didn't say what age the patient was? Were they exposed to long term low levels of natural gas? The 2 porphyria patients I have (and still treat regularly) were both victims of a forced air system that leaked low levels of nat'l gas for over a decade. Interestingly, both parents and one of the children in the family developed porphyria. Only one of them has dystonia that is directly related to the chemical toxicity. (according to the neurologist). Interesting.

So you might try detox methods if the dystonia is chemically induced. I used that with the one patient and it was effective. She does have relapses occasionally, but it's rare. She gets botox for her facial dystonia and it's very effective as well.

Dr. Chandler,

I had a patient last year diagnosed with Cervical dystonia ( aka subluxated patient).

Long story short his condition was so debillitating that he lost his job, his home, and was literally down to pennies.

He saught care from numerous m.d's, chiropractors, and had been receiving botox shots at $100 a pop each week for

almost a year. His wife had heard about our clinic through a friend and decided to give it one more shot.

I have to admit when i had first seen him, it was the second most severe case of cervical spasms i had ever witnessed. The

first being the case of the naturapath who decided to give a cervical manipulation to a fellow patient.

When i examined the patients spine it revealed a subluxation of C6 and T6. Radiographic evaluation revealed a severe scoliosis

of the cervical and thoracic spine. His neck had literally been stuck in a left lateral flexion position coupled with left rotation for almost a

year! I began adjustments to his T6 with a listing of PRI-T for about 2 weeks, which diminished his symptoms by about 70%. For

the next few weeks we began specific adjustment to the C6 as a PRI-La which diminished his symptoms to about 90%. He is currently

on maintenace care and one of my best referral sources.

My best advice to you is to treat the subluxation and not the disease. You have to be very careful not to adjust with rotational

maneuvers with these patients.

Your cervical dystonia case will be one of the most difficult cases you will face. Remember the old saying " Chiropractic always

works and when does not seem to, do not question Chiropractic, question your application!

Good luck and please feel free to contact me anytime.

I always think of autoimmunity when the body is freaking out like that. So I treat it as such. Included in that is the question of hypothyroidism (the canary in the mine) and how if there is not enough T3 present the microfilaments of the msls can't relax once they've contracted. Admittedly I have not treated this condition, but I get lots of weird cases referred my way. What's causing the body to revolt? Why is the neurological system hyper-firing? Something is in the body "stirring the pot", the dystonia is just a symptom in my mind. http://www.springerlink.com/content/w2532wr914gp2cl2/Of course there is a neurological component and biomechanical component as well. However, when I think of neurology gone wrong (aside from an obvious mechanical issue), I think gluten and toxins. I'm with Dr Guerrero there. There was a great article written on Gluten and Ataxia. http://www.livingwithout.com/issues/4_12/ataxia-2366-1.html Tyna , ND, DCLake Oswego Chiropractic Clinic315 Second StreetLake Oswego, OR 97034503-635-6246Website: http://www.lakeoswegochiro.com

Here is a fantastic musician who struggles with focal dystonia. He had to re-learn how to play with his opposite hand in order to continue his career. Beautiful music, it is in the mix at my clinic.

There are many references at his website, none to chiropractic that I can see, but this may be a good resource starting place for those with patients who suffer from dystonia. I know one woman who is involved with a vocal dystonia group and she relates that these folks really suffer.
