Blessings right back at cha! While it takes all of us to keep all of us in practice, your passionate focus is highly appreciated! Dear Colleagues, in the Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon, Sweet Home areas who can join me at this meeting? It is important that we continue to voice our chiropractic views of true prevention and wellness and by so doing continue to get the word out as per the what our profession has to offer compared to the medical model of drugs, drugs and more drugs…We have become a nation of “pill poppers” nearing the 4 billion prescription drug purchases per year mark that’s “B” for BILLION! The direct cost of these prescription drugs are expected to reach $500 billion by the year 2015 and that’s direct costs and doesn’t include the indirect costs of treating adverse drug events which result in an estimated 2 million hospitalizations and 1 million ER visits each year those costs being estimated to be an additional $65 billion. In fact a report from the CDC this year stated that 9 out of 10 poisonings are due to prescription drugs and deaths due to prescription drugs now outnumber annual traffic deaths in the US. 1 million teenagers are prescribed two psychiatric drugs each year with no evidence that this is even safe and an estimated 300,000 children under the age of 10 are also prescribed two psychiatric drugs in combination again with no safety studies to support such! 85% of the elderly meaning Americans over the age of 65 take at least one prescription drug daily, 75% take four daily and 11% take five or more! This is relative to prescription medications and doesn’t include OTC drugs which are certainly not benign. Acetaminophen is the leading cause of liver failure in the US resulting in 56,000 ER visits and 100 deaths annually, NSAIDs are the 2nd leading cause of peptic ulcers, result in 100,000 hospitalizations, costing $2 billion and result in 17,000 deaths annually…the equivalent of one of those SkyWest 50 passenger commuter jets United subcontracts with loaded with 46 passengers crashing every single day! Oregon is currently third in the nation for prescription narcotic abuse resulting in 700 deaths between 1997-2007 and first in the nation for spinal surgery per capita with Bend (over) Oregon leading the nation as per cities having the highest spinal surgical rates…oh and did I mention they also have the highest number of MRI machines per capita in the nation…no way are they going to miss an incidental disc bulge that one of the 7 spine surgeons can use to help make that house payment at Broken Top, Aubrey Butte, or Prong Horn! As your lobbyist and more importantly your colleague I will continue to voice the dirty laundry of medicine until it is common knowledge amount not only legislators and governmental policy makers but the lay public in general going to events such as this continually and consistently and voicing these statistics will help inform the public and they need to know….it is not just a matter of how we pay for healthcare in Oregon it’s how we deliver that healthcare! Colleagues you are all such caring natural healers with your art of touch, you simply provide services that no other healthcare profession can duplicate. You all so deserve to not just survive but to prosper and I assure you all that your only state association is going to continue the good fight…the Oregon Chiropractic Association and its dedicated leadership will never slow down, never take the pressure off, never ever give up until the OCA achieves that level playing field for you all!! Ok, I’ll shut up now….. Lecture and Discussion Series in CorvallisA group of members in Corvallis has arranged for Liz Baxter, the current executive director of We Can Do Better and highly respected in the health and health care community, to share with us some of her experiences and insights. The first of a series of four sessions is planned for Wednesday, March 28, and will use a lecture/discussion-with-questions-and-answer format designed to help us understand how our health care system got to its present unsatisfactory state of functionality, and why it fails to meet our health care needs. Subsequent sessions will cover possible ways for the health care system to align more closely with our needs; and what kind of changes are currently taking place, both at the national and local levels. Liz Baxter, photo by Boyd/The Oregonian We are very fortunate that Ms. Baxter is willing to come to Corvallis for these sessions. Her broad experience in health policy and health services research, Medicaid and Medicare, public engagement and most recently chairing the Board of Directors of the Oregon Health Insurance Exchange Corporation, make her a treasure trove of knowledge about current changes in our health care system. She is especially skilled at explaining complicated, convoluted information into language folks like me (who can't understand doctor-speak) can understand. We are also pleased that the Missions Committee of the First Presbyterian Church of Corvallis is co-sponsoring these sessions. I hope you will be able to join us for this informative and inspiring series. No matter what your level of understanding of our health care system might be, there will be plenty for all of us to learn from Ms. Baxter. I encourage you to invite your friends and neighbors to join us on Wednesday evening, March 28, for a refreshing and understandable analysis of our current health care system. All sessions are free and open to the public, but I wanted to give you advance notice with this e-mail so you could plan ahead.
