Guest guest
Thanks Ted. I have heard of DC acupuncture programs. I am curious if they are the same as theacupuncture ‘acupuncture’ programs, where you start off in acupuncture school not have a prior healing profession degree? They claim all sorts of stuff in their training and understanding of things that I know little about not to mention what they claim are zillion of hours in needling techniques. So it is hard to understand how one could learn all of the new stuff in 100 hours and call oneself an acupuncturist. They are totally bent about dry needling of trigger points….if I was them I would put my unhappiness here at a 100 hour program to be able to call yourself an acupuncturist. s. fuchs dc From: Dr. Ted Forcum [mailto:TForcum@...] Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2012 12:15 PM Sharron Fuchs Cc: Subject: Re: Re: Fwd: Acpuncture course Most DC acupuncture programs are post graduate. Guest guest
Does anyone know what Dr. Satya Ambrose, ND, LAc opinion is on this topic? She is one of the co-instructors listed for the new 100 hour acupuncture program at UWS local campus. She also teaches at NCNM and on her website there she lists she a co-founder of Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. Guest guest
I have no idea. She must feel fine about it if she is teaching it. Can you explain how a 100 hr or even a 200 hr acupuncture training course makes one able to call oneself an acupuncturist? Who certifies them? And how is that certification different from the type of training or certification one gets by going through acupuncture school? s. fuchs dc Re: Re: Fwd: Acpuncture course Does anyone know what Dr. Satya Ambrose, ND, LAc opinion is on this topic? Guest guest
The DC acupuncture program has been around for decades in many other states, FL, NM, AZ etc. UWS has students from across the country, so an acupuncture program would serve them and align with other colleges like NWHSU, Logan and SCUHS.Sent from I-phoneTed Forcum, DC, DACBSPOn Jan 26, 2012, at 12:22 PM, "Sharron Fuchs" <sharronf@...> wrote: Thanks Ted. Guest guest
The irony about being a chiropractor, is that different states have different scope laws for our profession. In some states you can practice acupuncture, as a DC. Some states require a chiro. to call themselves a " Certified acupuncturist " , " chiropractic acupuncturist " and others " registered " to perform acupuncture. You would have to look at each individual state's DC laws. The ACA has a council on acupuncture and I am sure they would be able to give you the most up to date info. Guest guest
So, I presume unlike Oregon where acupuncturists are under the Board of Medical Examiners, a DC acupuncturist is a separate entity and free from having to be under another board? s. fuchs dc From: Dr. Ted Forcum [mailto:TForcum@...] Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2012 1:20 PM Sharron Fuchs Cc: Subject: Re: Re: Fwd: Acpuncture course The DC acupuncture program has been around for decades in many other states, FL, NM, AZ etc. UWS has students from across the country, so an acupuncture program would serve them and align with other colleges like NWHSU, Logan and SCUHS. Guest guest
So why can't a DC with one of those titles practice acupuncture here in Oregon? s. fuchs dc Re: Re: Fwd: Acpuncture course The irony about being a chiropractor, is that different states have different scope laws for our profession. Guest guest
Go Figure.......I am not the legal mind. I completed Dr. Yennie's 100 hour acupuncture program, sponsored by Texas Chiropractic College, many years ago, and as you know completed the Dry Needling course with Dr. Fishkin and still we can't practice Dry Needling (not acupuncture) in this state. Funny profession we are in! Guest guest
FYI. Here is an ACA diplomate exam after 300 hours of training. I looked up NCCAOM which is behind several of the doctors names below, and it is a certifying body. In their certification handbook it says that you can be trained by several routes ie academic, apprenticeship or a combination of both but you must have met the requirements of training regardless of route before you can sit for the certifying exam. If you are academically trained (see page 26) you must have 1490 hours of training prior to taking the certifying exam. http://www.nccaom.org/wp-content/uploads/pdf/2011%20Certification%20Handbook.pdf Given the number of hours required to obtain a NCCAOM title I find it interesting that the Drs. below have put their name next to a diplomate exam that only requires a 300 hour training course. (Perhaps they realized how little it really takes to get trained?) Again, if I was an acupuncturist, I would be more concerned about the 100, 200 or 300 hours of training required to call yourself an acupuncturist than I would about treating myofascial trigger points. s. fuchs dc Chiropractic Acupuncture: Diplomate Exam in 2009 By Todd Frisch, DC, ABCA president; Jon Sunderlage, DC, Dipl Ac (NCCAOM), CCA president; Yennie, DC, Dipl Ac (NCCAOM), CCA president emeritus; Lawrence Beem, DC, FASA; Joy Sunderlage, DC, Dipl Ac (NCCAOM) The ACA Council of Chiropractic Acupuncture (CCA) and the American Board of Chiropractic Acupuncture (ABCA) are developing the first ACA Chiropractic Acupuncture 300-hour diplomate examination, expected to be available in the first quarter of 2009. The ABCA was created to credential knowledgeable, safe and effective chiropractic practitioners in the art, science and philosophy of acupuncture within nationally recognized standards. Its main function is to evaluate and test candidates in chiropractic acupuncture who meet 300 hours of prerequisite education and training in accordance with established educational standards. Making this certification program possible requires developing guidelines and protocols of psychometric evaluation, including our bylaws, the candidates’ handbook, study guide, certification examination procedures manual, proctors manual, reference book list, and most important, creating a challenging written and oral/practical diplomate exam. At present, phases I and II of the Delphi Study have been completed. All handbooks, guides, and manuals are in their final stages. Under the guidance of ACA and the American Board of Chiropractic Specialties, ABCA has started gathering sample questions from all CCE-approved acupuncture educational programs and teachers, field doctors who use acupuncture in their practices, and the ABCA board. The goal is to create a bank of 1,000 questions to utilize for future diplomate exams. Notifications about the upcoming exam will be published four months prior to the examination date. Diplomate examination review will be scheduled one month prior to the exam. Transcripts documenting 300 postgraduate hours in chiropractic acupuncture are required for those who wish to sit for the exams. To receive notification regarding the exam date, application details, exam review date, and ABCA Web page, please e-mail your name, degree, and contact information to D. Yennie, DC, at ryenniedc@.... Those holding state licenses as acupuncturists, NCCAOM, initial ACA council and board officers, and post-graduate acupuncture instructors (with a minimum of 10 years of experience) are encouraged to submit proof of credentials by Dec. 31, 2009, to qualify for DABCA in lieu of the 300-hour diplomate exam requirement.
