Guest guest
Anyonw who missed the Oprah show can get the book, " You, The Owners Manual " by Drs. Oz and Roizen. They were the two docs on the show and the book covers everything on the show in much greater detail. I can tell you reading it is changing my life. Guest guest
It's a start, what said on the show. It wasn't perfect but it was put out there. is a mom and she is doing what she can. I too wish that " Thimerosal " or " mercury " would have been spoken, but after a ton of fluff information and " awareness " only shows, it's great to at least get this far. doesn't have to say who she is to be given credibility - she is a mom of a child with autism and she said it perfectly when she said she owes it to her son to do everything she can to help him. She is humble, emotional, smart and someone other moms can relate to. > > I thought the show was going to be better given all the hype on this > group. Everyone has different opinions. Guest guest
I don't think the point of praising on this board is to forget about the past or ignore what yet needs to be done... but to begin to involve her in a much louder and proactive activism. I agree with you about A.S., but If this community could get someone like - Hildebrand to shout as loud as we do... it's going to help us. She's possibly as fed up with A.S. as we are... maybe more so. She's taken a FIRST STEP. Maybe not a big one, but she's facing the right direction. Let's welcome her and not be judgmental for the " sins of the father. Guest guest
You are certainly entitled to your opinion and I can understand the frustration but I am of the opinion that you are being a bit *harsh* on . Do I wish that she had said more? Yes. Do I wish that she had gone into biomedical treatments more? Yes. Do I think that she was courageous nonetheless? YES. For me, I have to remember that there we all have our own different personality types. If you take anyone on this list and put them in 's position, each of us would have handled the situation differently. Some people are bold and would have been more assertive and would have said more. Others are quiet and wouldn't have contradicted the doctor. I don't think that we can throw blame around so easily. If I put myself in her position, I sort of hope that I would have said more but let's face it... lights on me, doctor sitting there saying x,y,z, knowing that 90% of the medical community is going to be pissed off about what I was going to say, etc. etc. It's difficult. How many of you have been in situations when the vaccine question comes up and you either hold back completely or tame down what you really could say and/or wanted to say. I have. Guest guest
on the other hand, Oprah, if she had chosen to, could have given katie more of an option to explain her position on vaccines, But Oprah dfidn't, for whatever her reasons, or the reasons of the show executives. I think if they had, katie would have run with it and said a lot more on the subject. maurineceliacdaughter <suemisiaszek@...> wrote: You are certainly entitled to your opinion and I can understand the frustration but I am of the opinion that you are being a bit *harsh* on . Guest guest
I think there is a fine line that we are walking here. I think there is a time for subtlty and a time for guns-a-blazing. We aren't only trying to validate those who already know about vaccines causing autism (me, you, others who do biomed), we need to reach those who don't (and don't want to) believe it. They need to be swayed. We can't have going out there looking like a fanatic, hysterical, emotional mess. There is so much information that needs to be brought to light, but not by and the other guests on the show yesterday. We need experts, scientists, DAN! doctors, to do that work. could have said, " I beleive .... and we do xyz " - that would have been great, but for now, it's a start. We also don't know what " rules " Oprah and her producers put on what could amd could not be discussed. I think Oprah also knows (or highly suspects) vaccines are causal. She is also not going to put herself in a position of getting sued again (if she can help it). I hate it too - the PC crap, but the reality is that if I can't convince friends of mine and my own family members with the arsenal of information I have that mercury toxicity and autism are synonomous maybe Oprah's show can - slowly. As far as being rich, I'm sorry but heart ache affects us all regardless of how much or how little money we have. One last thing I don't understand is why you said " her daddy... " why can't you say " her father " ? You make it sound like she's a spoiled brat. We all have a huge fish to fry here (Pharma and it's governmental protectors) so let's focus on moving forward. > > > > > > I thought the show was going to be better given all the hype on > > this > > > group. Guest guest
THere you go again, Mike, bashing parents who are just trying to help.....just like you did to the Dad who called in to the Randi Show. Maybe you should have read J.B. Handley's post before you started with your negative tirade. I cannot understand why anyone would have such hostility towards a mother of a vaccine injured child who is trying to help. Furthermore, your accusations are inaccurate; did say on the show many of the things you accuse her of not saying. You take pot shots at someone because she may have financial resources - that is just plain wrong. And I seriously doubt you know her well enough to know what her personal situation at home. All I can say is thank God you were'nt on the Oprah show. > > > > > > I thought the show was going to be better given all the hype on > > this > > > group. Everyone has different opinions. Guest guest
I would refrain from criticizing anyone’s appearance on a major TV show -- with a live audience, a massive crew, eight cameras, hundred of bright lights, and millions of people watching you at home -- unless you have ever done it yourself. It aint easy. was poised and articulate and forceful just enough. She wasn’t given the opportunity to say more, and Oprah is not a free-for-all. It is pretty harsh to attack her performance, I think. As for her timing, she spoke out as soon as it was feasible to do so. Cheers DK
Guest guest
Hi Mike: Here in NJ, in the land of expensive elite private autism schools and the highest per capita income of any state in the country, there are MANY autism moms similarly situated to (beau coup resources and connections). I know a lot of these women personally, and without a single exception of which I am aware, these moms handle their child's autism by: 1/hiring a lot of household help; 2/setting up a private at home therapy program to keep their child occupied nearly all the time the child is at home; 3/enrolling their child in a private autism school; and 4/GETTING ON WITH THEIR LIVES. They aren't starting autism advocacy organizations and " messing up their lifestyles " . Many of them don't even do battle with their school districts--they just pay the freight at the autism school and fund all the home therapists themselves. could have done that. I have enormous respect for her because she chose a much more difficult path. Also, I think came out with just enough information. If you say too much, people turn off and just think you're crazy. Kudos to . Jenna > > > > > > I thought the show was going to be better given all the hype on > > this > > > group. Everyone has different opinions. Guest guest
From my perspective what happened on the Oprah show yesterday was a small but hugely significant event for the upliftment of society, and for the autism community in particular. I think did everything she could yesterday and for that, I am immensely grateful. Gayatri > > > > > > > > I thought the show was going to be better given all the hype on > > > this > > > > group. Guest guest
Same here. Given the constraints of the show, I think she did very well. Of course we would love to have this issue get more media air- time, but was able to take an opportunity with Oprah, and at least get in some tidbits of information on what would have otherwise been a show completely absent of any contradictions to what the doctor was saying. Knowing now that the audience was able to hear more specifics from , is great. Perhaps some parents in the audience were able to make the connection, particularly after seeing the earlier video of just how NT Christian appeared to be. She didn't " bomb " . If ahs is disappointed, well, that's his opinion. Hopefully he reads JB's post about what was said but not aired, and cuts her some slack. > > > > > > > > > > I thought the show was going to be better given all the hype > on > > > > this > > > > > group. Guest guest
I have a world of respect for what JB has done, but, I don't need to read his posts before stating my own opinion! Besides he didn't post until after I did karen. I don't believe in class envy, I was trying to illustrate that the moms on this list have much greater challenges in reference to a comment. After reading my original post I can see where it sounded harsh. Sometimes the truth is. I fully support and look forward to her telling her story. I guess I am confused about the AS infomercial and why much of the program failed to honestly state little science or facts. I hope the exchange that was edited out is broadcast. I will gladly back off of my comments and allow to continue to step up in the coming weeks. I realize this may take a lot of courage for her. Revisiting this issue in a couple weeks will answer some critical questions about the direction of AS and weather they can advocate effectively and honestly. > > > > > > > > I thought the show was going to be better given all the hype > on > > > this > > > > group. Guest guest
Unfortunately, we should consider ourselves lucky that they didn't edit out ALL of 's vaccine commentary. They could have easily done that. Heck, Oprah has been avoiding autism for years she could have declined to do this show entirely. This Oprah show wasn't designed to be a debate on whether vaccines cause autism. Hopefully down the road she will discuss this but I doubt it. We will have to watch CourtTV or maybe C-SPAN for that come June 11th. > > I would refrain from criticizing anyone's appearance on a major TV show > -- with a live audience, a massive crew, eight cameras, hundred of > bright lights, and millions of people watching you at home -- unless you > have ever done it yourself. > > It aint easy. > > was poised and articulate and forceful just enough. Guest guest
My point was that you passed judgement before knowing the entire story....and if I remember correctly you also appeared on a news show to discuss autism and I doubt you would like your efforts to be criticized on a public forum. As far as moms on this list having greater challenges than Ms. , that may or may not be true. You should never assume that someone's life is easier just because they are not struggling financially. We are really all the same, wealthy or not, as we have all been devastated by autism and the loss that goes with it. I'd gladly give up everything I have and live in a cardboard box if it meant my son could completely recover and have a happy, healthy life....and I am certain many others in our community feel the same way. And if does have all the domestic help you suggested, great, that will give her more time to advocate for our vaccine injured kids. -- In EOHarm , " ahs10402 " <allprint@...> wrote: > > I have a world of respect for what JB has done, but, I don't need to read his posts before > stating my own opinion! Guest guest
Wow, that made me throw up a little. This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with personally her, nor the Oprah show – which I did not watch - but good god people, she is just a person, like you and me. She doesn't poop any differently than you do, so stop giving her some mythical powers. She is not better than you, not any one of us. She is just herself, and all that entails, good and bad. I do agree money lessens her daily burdens, which is a problem I would LOVE to have (for instance, i am sitting in a house with 5 ASD kids right now and only took a few minutes away from cleaning, cooking, chasing, sweeping, wiping, etc kids to read some emails because there isn't a maid to do it all - maybe my next life!! ) but that comment about " us ordinary people " was way off in my opinion. She isn't any more extraordinary than any one of us. She just has more resources and more help. Think of how much you could get done with her resources behind you – like if you could sleep 8 hours, didn't have to worry about money etc. Please don't consider yourself, or any of the rest of us, " less " because we were born in the " wrong " family. Guest guest
Not passing judgment, just stating some facts. Yes, I am camera shy and not very good at it. I have never been coached and have very little experience with TV. Go ahead a criticize my efforts of that resulted in our governor signing autism insurance legislation. I really don't care, I will be proactive, results driven and an opinionated asshole once in awhile if I am sleep deprived, battling IEP's, changing legislation and advocating with all the effort I am capable of. Take all the pop shots at me you want . I'll let my actions and record stand up against your personal attacks anytime. I honestly wish you and your family well, we just have many differences. I accept that. I think the country is aware of autism and more awareness is good, but we need more action and more candor in order to solve these complex problems. I did forget was on this list and apologize. Money is a huge factor for our children's ability to recover and the parents physical and mental well being. I honestly believe the shows outcome and content was very controlled and AS could have negotiated a much different outcome. AS is trying to have it both ways as I see it. With the power and influence they have, I am holding them, not , to a higher standard. was representing AS. I would ask everyone on this list to encourage open and passionate debate. is in a tough position, but we must be separate our criticism of AS from worrying about offending her if someone wants to criticize her parents or anyone at AS. These type of comments should not be censored. This holds true for any of us or the organizations we support. We have much more at stake. Just like the CAA, many of us disagree and it is very personal for all of us. I am deeply concerned when I see Hillary(and R-Sen Allard) introducing a autism bill with AS behind her as she enters into the presidential campaign season. It doesn't take someone who is politically savvy to understand this stinks and is political pandering. We are in a long battle for our children and will suffer further damage if we do not stand up and address this for what it is . Your choice: Fight for these kids and families or play the appeasement game and watch millions more suffer over the next 10 years. For the rest of the month every time you log onto a group like this make a commitment to write a letter to a legislator and /or newspaper. I know most people on this list care not only about their children but all these kids, but many of you still have never called and met with your legislators. Please make this a priority and follow through on it. It is one of the most effective ways we can influence genuine change. While these Oprah type shows provide some positive awareness, they distort they publics view of what the underlying issues are and systematically influence a false public perception while making us look like a fringe group of emotional parents. > > > > > > > > > > > > I thought the show was going to be better given all the > hype > > > on > > > > > this > > > > > > group.
