She still has her quirks, but am fine with the results of the vitamins. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Urbis Sent: Sunday, May 20, 2007 8:19 PM Subject: Dietary Supplements My daughter , age 10, has been diagnosed with mild OCD and the psch has not recommended medication unless things get out of control. Guest guest
Well, gee, thank you so much for the compliment!! And thanks for the supplement info. We are just now getting to 150mg 5-HTP a day, working up towards 300mg. How fast did you move up on dosage? I told him to wait 3-4 days or so between going up, see if he feels anything good or bad. Refresh my memory - what does SAM-E do? Wonder if we might add that after getting to 300mg 5-HTP. If the 5-HTP doesn't help, next thing to try (stopping the 5-HTP first) is St. 's Wort. is still saying " no " for prescribed meds. He's having a really rough time now too. (which means " I " am having a rough time too, LOL) Dr. Penzel told me not to give up on inositol so easily. It didn't work for this time. He said another brand might be worth trying, even though we used the same brand this time that worked for back in middle school. That brands vary with reaction, even a bad or no reaction to one brand but not another. So - let's see: try the 5-HTP now, if doesn't help, then SJW, if not that then maybe another brand of inositol powder. SIGH! This is as bad as having to trial the prescription ones if the first one doesn't work! Here's what Dr. Penzel said: " Firstly, I wouldn't totally give up on inositol. It may be that it really won't work for your son, but I have also found that some brands seem to work better than others. I have had some patients suddenly get worse when they simply switched brands. Is your son using the same brand that worked for him previously? I would try another brand that is of high quality, just to see. " Neither he nor Dr. Jenike sounded " enthused " about our trying 5-HTP. They both seemed to think SJW might be better to try. Dr. P warned me about quality of product though. But we will stick with the 5-HTP to give it a fair trial and hope for some benefit! Really, reading about it I don't see why it won't help, but then it's an " iffy " thing too I guess, like one SSRI doesn't work for all people, inositol powder doesn't help all, etc. > > She takes 100 mg, 3 times per day. Any opinion on what brands of inositol are considered good? No, no tips on how to be sure of quality. Figure I'll just research on the internet. As to inositol brands, we used Source Naturals and I felt it was good quality. Of course, LOL, this time around it didn't help . I know other brands have been mentioned here over the years that parents were using but can't think of any now.
Guest guest
What is considered a " good brand " for inositol? Hi Dina, I really don't know. Parents have mentioned several brands over time. We used Source Naturals, which I like.
Guest guest
Has anyone heard of these dietary supplements: Catalyn 2160 and Slippery elm? I have some information on them but I wanted to see if anyone had some info on them as far as safety and/or efficacy of them for bariatric patients. I have a patient wanting to take them and I have not had time to research them. Thanks in advance for any input! Beth Gries RD LD
Guest guest
Consumer Labs.com has good back ground information on many herbal products they also test the products for purity, concentration and contaminates. You do have to pay for access but the fee is low. On the down side from what I understand companies pay them to test their products and if they pass they get the good news posted but if they fail the information is never posted. Another great website is the American Botanical Council there is a charge as well for them.
