A relative of ours has gone through chemo shunted directly to the brain, and that led the family to do some web searches on the topic. I don't know if this treatment involved the same drug or procedure. Apparently, traditional chemotherapy is not very effective with brain tumors. I'm told it has something to do with the drugs not being able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, which prevents most drugs in the bloodstream from entering the brain. A web search on this topic will point out that they are testing something called convection-enhanced delivery, where Topotecan is slowly pumped into tumors through two catheters. The concern is that too much could have some serious side effects, but apparently Topotecan delivered in this manner is not harmful to normal brain tissue. One researcher noted that " promising preliminary results indicate that this treatment provides a survival advantage that is favorable compared to other treatments that are often used for recurrent malignant gliomas. " Dr. Ralph probably has far more insight on this issue. Ken Jakalski Lisle High School Lisle, Illinois USA
