Guest guest
Hi there! Congrats on such awesome news. I'm sure this must be a huge weight lifted off your shoulders. I guess since Madison never had a cast without the shirt I'm not sure that I can really offer any advice on that area. I lliked the shirt because if there was skin breakdown the blood would spread on the shirt so i would know it was actually there. I know that doesn't sound too good, but it's better than it going on so long that I wouldn't know for much later. Also, if something got up the cast, it would get stuck tot he shirt and then I could just pull it down and wash the shirt and get any mess out og there. what worked for me is of course not going to work for everyone...maybe some things you hadn't thought about? Once again, CONGRATS!!!! Jen Sjviv314 <jviv314@...> wrote: and Deshea,I absolutely HATE that darn shirt. What a pain in the neck for every diaper change! Very difficult to do the tuck technique. We're doing it (or shall I say I'm doing it as hubby will NOT attempt this one), but it takes a while. I've already been tempted to cut the bottom of it, wrap it over bottom of cast and tape it in place with the waterproof tape. Guest guest
Hey guys, You may not remember me but my daughter was in Erie in the full body cast last November for the conference (Lily). Anyway, about the shirt under the cast. I love it. It keeps her from gettin smelly and sweaty. Anyway, Lily was put into her second cast right after the conference in November in SLC. I cut the shirt shorter and rolled it up over the cast and taped in with that Hy waterproof tape and dipering is a since because the shirt is out of the way and taped up. I put the tape as high as I could up into the cast without getting it wrinkly up there and just brought it around to the outside of the cast and taped the shirt up. It has been great. If she leaks at all, I just have to wipe off the tape and I am done. I just bought some of the tape online for her next cast because they don't like giving it out in SLC, they say it is too expensive. I also found a wider tape than they had in SLC the is 3inch wide instead of 1 inch that they gave me there. I have loved taping it that way and have found it extreamely easy to diaper. Just my two cents. Hansen > > Hmmm, I just may try taping it to his cast. Guest guest
Of course I remember you guys! I think I am going to go ahead and tape it up tomorrow then. They gave me a whole roll of the tape at Erie, so I should be able to tape it up with no problem. Do you put tape inside the cast or just on the outside? I am having trouble visualizing... Guest guest
hey heather! how are you guys? i am surprised they didn't waterproof tape it for you at the hospital. when we left erie the first time, they taped it for us when they did the petaling. however, this last time, we had to do it ourselves. makes all the difference in the world..in my opinion anyway! lol hope lily is doing well!! lexi gets her brace on tuesday morning. we are going to try this for awhile especially since we have some upcoming hand operations. hope it will get some progress with her curve. take care :-) tracey shirt under cast> > > and Deshea,> > I absolutely HATE that darn shirt. Guest guest
Hey gang, believe it or not, I work for a medical tape company. Please let me know what kind of tape you're talking about and we have tons of samples that need to get into the hands of prospective users. Wet proof tape is one of our products. Let me know and I'll send some out. shirt under cast> > > and Deshea,> > I absolutely HATE that darn shirt. What a pain in the neck for every > diaper change! Very difficult to do the tuck technique. Guest guest
I am soo happy to hear all went well in Erie for you group of Moms. you are soo brave for going without your hubby!!! Recovery is soo hard with crying and waving her arms. I need Jim there just to take turns holding her in recovery!! Did you guys already get your return dates?? got her 2nd cast put on Dec. 15th. with that same shirt. I think I posted right after that of how bad I hate the shirt too. I tried taping it but she is soo active (23 months today) that it gets loose alot because of the shirt and tape rubbing together!! But the shirt does help with smells. She has had a couple accidents with " number twos " but if you scrub the shirt with woolite and then blow dry it then the shirt stays nice. Dr. Khoury said we had to have the shirt because the other padding they were putting under the casts was not thick enough for their delicate skin!! I think i would definately try taping and scrubbing before recasting so soon after. But I sooo agree that the shirt is hard to get use to. Guest guest
I got about a six inch long strip of tape and put it as far up inside the cast that I could reach and then rapped it around to the outside holding the shirt in place on the outside of the cast. The tape they gave me was only one inch thick, so I had to overlap the tape and use a ton of it to line the entire bottom of the cast. If you still have a hard time pituring what I did let me know and I will send you a picture of it. It has worked so great!!! > > > > Hmmm, I just may try taping it to his cast. Guest guest
Hte tape is called Hy tape and is pinkish orange in color. I went online and bought some and the cheapest I could find was 20 bucks for a five yard roll that was 3in. thick. It is pretty expensive. I believe that it comes in many different widths up to 4 in. Guest guest
Hi Tracey, It is good to hear from you. I hope the bracing goes well for Lexi. Will you go back to casting after her surgeries are taken care of? I guess that different Shriners hospitals do different things with taping and petaling. The SLC hospital suggest to always stay at least one night and do the petaling the next day. They say it is much better to petal the cast when it has had the night to completely dry. I have to say it did work much better than the first time Lily was casted. We petaled her the first time while she was still asleep from just coming out of recovery and the petals kept falling off everywhere and rolling up anytime she moved. It drove me crazy. The second time we just waited to petal her until the next time. It made a huge difference in how well the petals stuck because her cast was dry. I guess the SLC hospital does not like to freely give out the Hy tape that is waterproof because it is so expensive. Oh well, I guess I can splurge on tape I mean getting free treatment and all. I hope things continue to go well for your family and let me know how Lexi does with all of her surgeries. Take care > > > > Hmmm, I just may try taping it to his cast. Guest guest
Hi , I am so glad to hear that things are going well with cole besides the whole getting sick aspect. It was great to meet your family in Erie back in November. I sometimes wish I was having Lily treated there just so I could see everyone that I met at the conference, but I love SLC. The cutting the shirt and taping it up is wonderful huh? and Eliana taught me how to do that last time we were in SLC (another mom and daughter in the group). Did you put the tape up into the cast also. I have found that by doing that if Lily does leak a little all I have to do is wipe the tape off and not the shirt. The shirt does not even get dirty at all. Hope cole gets better soon!! Hansen Lily Hansen(4-12-04) > > > > > > Hmmm, I just may try taping it to his cast. Guest guest
Hi ,How are things? I wrote you in Dec. a long personal e-mail, which I don't think you received, did you? Anyways, what is the latest with Lily? Is she still in the full body cast? What is next? I'd love to hear how things are going. Guest guest
Trust me...I won't do this solo again. It's way too stressful doing it by myself. We did get our next dates which are the 15th and 16th of March. When do you go back? Dr. K actually told me I could take the shirt out, but he wasn't sure how well we'd make out doing that since there is not a lot of padding in there. He again offered to recast...uh, no way! I am too tired from this cast and I just cannot do it again so soon. I am going to try the taping. I hadn't thought about Woolite...it might be worth trying. I don't think I remember you mentioning the shirt. I had no idea we'd be getting a shirt until mentioned it to me. I guess I just need time to adjust to it. Guest guest
Hi , I had computer problems in December and also way to many family members in town so needless to say it was a very busy month. I don't think I ever did get your email. Lily is doing great. Her second cast was put on a week after we left Erie. They checked her hips and she had made remarkable progress. We did not have to put her in a full body cast again. She just has to wear a brace around her hips at night and for naps to keep them spread apart and hopefully our third cast change her hips will be completely healed. That was the good news our last visit. Although her cast change was not great. In the full body cast she was corrected from 46 degrees to 8 degrees in the cast. They took the first cast off and we went to the inlaws for the night to bathe her and play. Her back looked awesome for the first few hours and then you could tell it started to rubber band back down again. They did not x-ray her again the next day to see how much it had fallen which I will make them do next time. The second cast is holding her at 14 degrees now. I think they just did not do as good of cast this time. Our next appointment is March 6th in SLC and I hope we can get better results this time. After the first cast came off and the second was put on she had to relearn how to walk again. That was a pain!!! Her legs had no muscle and the cast was so heavy it took her a good month to even walk by herself again. Just in the last couple of weeks she is finally almost normal in her routines and able to pick things off the floor and get up by herself. I thought I was going to go crazy teaching her how to walk again. She knew she used to be able to do it and that frustrated her so bad. Things are great now though. Has cole started crawling around in the cast? Your kids are the cutest things!!! Hope your next cast goes mor smoothly and cole doesn't get sick again. I have stayed at the hospital overnight both times and am so grateful I did. We have always needed to fix something. This last time luckily I stayed in town with family for about a week after the cast change because Lily got really congested and sick like cole and we ended up back at the hospital so they could make sure she could breathe okay. I think I will definately stay in town since I have family there at least a few days every time to avoid having to fly back for little things. Did Coles spine look to bounce back down at all the night before he got the new cast on? Hope your having a great day!!! Lily(4-12-04) > > > > > > > > Hmmm, I just may try taping it to his cast. Guest guest
Hey , Cole's back went back a little, but not much. I didn't notice much visually in regards to it bouncing back. Cole has quickly learned to sit again (the last cast dug into his legs to much to sit), but we are still working on crawling. Like Lily, he needs to build up some muscles in his arms, and maybe some in his neck. With the last cast being so high in the back, he didn't have full range of motion with his neck either. We are very happy with this cast . It only weighs 12 oz. and is very thin, but sturdy. We will also be in Utah around the same time. Were going to St. March 8-15, and then back to Erie March 22-23 for the 3rd cast. Glad to hear things are going well and Lily is walking again. What a trooper for enduring the last cast! Good luck on the March casting. I wish I could be there to meet you. I was in Erie with the other two 's a week ago for Cole's second casting, but they scheduled us for the next week in March following yours. Who is you doctor? I am too tired from this cast and I just cannot do it again so soon. I am going to try the taping. I hadn't thought about Woolite...it might be worth trying. I don't think I remember you mentioning the shirt. I had no idea we'd be getting a shirt until mentioned it to me. I guess I just need time to adjust to it. Guest guest
Hey .I think Evan will be the youngest baby at Erie Shriner's! Cole was the youngest. He stared out at 8 months (now 10 months) and now Evan will be the youngest. At least that's what Dr. Kisham told me. In my opinion the lying down x-ray seems to be the more reliable. A baby who can't even sit yet would seem to exagerate the curve in a sitting position because he doesn't have the muscle support to try to sit up straight. Good luck. I'm happy Evan is getting a cast! You'll love Shriners. <basketsnboyds@...> wrote: Evan is 23 weeks old (5.5 mos!)- his curve was at 28-33 lying down and then at 62 sitting up with an RVAD in the high 50's. Guest guest
Wow- I didn't think he'd be the youngest baby at Erie- thank goodness my friend detected it early on Evan or I can't even imagine how bad it could've progressed! I think the lying down x-ray is more reliable as well! What did Cole start out at prior to his casting and hows he doing now? I read all the posts, but have a hard time remembering everyone! Guest guest
, Can't wait to hear the results on Adison. 70 degrees is a pretty big curve. My family will be praying the docs in Erie are able to get results that help him tremendously, especially if he has rotation. Please let us know how things turn out. I'm so glad you all are able to get treatment for him at this young age while he is still in the 0-2yr. growth time. Guest guest
Thanks so much shellie! It means a lot! i am praying for resluts too! the spine is completely rotated so that is bad. but hopefully since he is only 11months that we still have alot of time. what do you do about diapering? anna-mom to adison shirt under cast > > > > > > > > > > > > and Deshea, > > > > > > > > I absolutely HATE that darn shirt. Guest guest
The jury is still out on the shirt for me. I've taped it to the cast and diaper changes are easier, but it looks so yucky, but I see the advantages of absorbing sweat and the fact that it is antibacterial too. Ian is still in the same size diaper, and I just tuck it under. As the cast loosens up, the diapering gets easier. Good luck...I am praying that they get some fantastic results for you. Be sure to post when you get back...I will be anxious to hear how Adison makes out. Guest guest
, Ian has a lot of rotation (45 degrees) and they are seeing great improvement. I bet you will too. Guest guest
Hi , Just so you know, in either the first or second cast, you may not see as big a jump in the decrease of degree, but the rotation will go down. The Mehta casts are designed to address the rotation, so sometimes that is the improvment you see without a dramatic drop in degree of curvature. Let us know when you can how it went.
