Guest guest
I've been asked to help coordinate a conference for a major PID organization in the Southeast this Fall. I can't say who is giving it yet but it is well funded. They are wanting to know what topics the PID population would like to hear about and then we will research who would be best to discuss them. All names will be withheld and I am going to forward a very straightforward list of topics. Guest guest
I think I gained a ton from the life sessions I've attended. Parenting issues (Liked this at the conference last year, but think it would be good to break it up to smaller groups - maybe by age level - 1-6 6-10 11-13 14-18- very different issues for teens then 3 year olds - and while I want to know what to look forward to - the time is so limited, I really need info on dealing with issues NOW) The New study on kids and behavior Problems with PIDD. School Rights. Dealing with Extended Family. Parenting Multiple Children with PIDD. I'd love to see someone do a stress release seminar for parents even on male//female differences in dealing with stress - I'm thinking of the new parents and how hard this is on marriages. Dealing with sibling issues. Nice to hear there will be a conference in our neck of the woods - please let me know if I can be of any assistance Ursula. Guest guest
Still did not get my answer as to why these were needed-just wondering if you are planning a conference or helping someone plan a conference? Are you forwarding our responses to someone who is planning a conference? I was waiting for a reply from Ursula before I shared my conference topics.. Here are my ideas-please let me know what they are being used for (just being curious) - not that you can even use any of my topic ideas-but I would like to know if you are forwarding them on---(not that I would ever know if you hit the forward button..it would just be nice to have my question answered) I have about 24 ideas listed below: Would this be a conference geared for parents of PID kids? Or geared toward parents and kids? Because if it is geared toward just the parents there are several topics of interest. * How to cope with more than one kid with PID emotionally & financially. * How to cope with PID kids and still have time for your marriage relationship. * How to plan financially for your PID kids when they leave the nest. * How to plan for PID kids that may not be able to leave the nest. * How to plan for the kids when they get older and may not qualify for insurance. * Dealing with families t hat don't get PID. (crash course on tips to help families understand) * Dealing with schools, IEPs, 504s and dealing with schools/teachers that don't understand PIDs. If there are kid topics, there would be some great ones-sibling issues- * perhaps have a group meeting for siblings of children with PIDs. * Also have a group for kids who are the only child in their family who do not have a PID-I think these siblings have a hard time because they are " normal " yet feel like they are not because all of their siblings have PIDs and they do not. * Siblings dealing with their fears about their PID brother/sister. * PIDs kids dealing with their fears about the future. * PID kids: coping with having a PID-age appropriate talks/break out sessions * For teenage PIDers and those going off to college: Coping with PID while at college. * Take that a step further and have one for parents and teens on how to cope financially while the kid is in college, how to utilize their insurance while in college and what to do when insurance benefits run out. Even more topics: * PID treatments-- have talks for parents and kids about the various forms of treatment for the various PIDs. Something that Victory Junction Gang Camp did that I thought was a great idea-- when we signed up, they took a medical intake (from us and the doctors) and they had a resource room. They took the time to have information printed out on the diseases that each child had. They had information on the diseases, treatment and then a bunch of financial self-help articles and articles/handouts on coping with illnesses. You could do something like this for the conference & it would be nice-especially for those who have signed up that do not know a lot about the disease their child has. * I know it would be too far to go to have talks about each specific disease-but perhaps group them into " like " diseases and have an expert give a talk along with a Q & A. These types of break out sessions have always been helpful to families at conferences I have attended-- they get some info and then are able to ask a few questions from the experts. I think from our string of recent conversations these might be some decent topics: PIDs and digestive wellness or illness-whatever-call it what you want, but focus on digestive problems associated with PIDs and what parents and patients can do to enhance digestive wellness in their children. * Wound care in PIDs * Oral care in PIDs * Hospital coping strategies (you may want to ask parents of PIDers to give this one) - how to cope during hospital stays and IVIG/treatment days. (geared toward parental coping skills and children with PIDs coping and siblings coping) * Insurance and billing tips and strategies for keeping on top of the " pile " * SCIG- this would be a big one--- * How to find joy when dealing with a PID ...or life goes on and you can still find joy and happiness.or you could call it, sure you'll still have tears, but there is life after diagnosis with a PID-have parents and PIDers give small break out sessions after the big talk by whomever--- these small groups could help the newly diagnosed with their fears about never having what they consider a " normal " life.. help them to find a new " normal " among the chaos of the new PID diagnosis. * The healing power of humor * Like above with the expert break out sessions for various disease Q & A-you could have parents of various diseases available for Q & A sessions (have a doctor willing to be present in case medical questions need clarification, or to back the parent up)-have one, two or 3 for CVID sessions throughout the day & the families/parents could just come in at certain times and sit to chat-ditto for other PIDs... I think a good topic would be something that addresses the change over from a child to teen to early adult. On how to help our children change from being taken care of to being the self caretaker. A scary thing for us all. But something that is starting to hit me full force. I would love to talk with you some more on this and I am open to help in any way possible. Guest guest
YES! I forgot that one-I think more parents need to know about these care protocols AND!!!! READY FOR THIS TOPIC!? * Patients Bill of Rights - I think that people need to be educated on this-especially after the fiasco at our children's hospital this past year where they made some bogus policy restricting kids from leaving their treatment rooms. I was able to get it revoked-BECAUSE I knew the Patients Bill of Rights.. , I just zapped mine out about the same time and I have to say: GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE! <big grin> ~Pattie Curran~ Piedmont Triad, NC Elbridge Gerry--signer of the Declaration of Independence, Govenor of Massachusetts and Vice President of the United States under Madison.... Guest guest
OH-brings another topic to mind!!!! What happens to PID kids during puberty-or how does puberty affect PIDs. I went back through all of the emails (I have folders set up to make it easy) to be sure and it wasn't there. Thanks for re-sending. I find that I miss emails---- I get replies to emails that I never saw the original-that's part of the reason I always leave what I am replying to in my reply-I cut off the trailers, but leave the text I am replying to. I have been confused at times because people reply to messages where I have never seen the original and the original message isn't in their reply. I know there are archives, but I never have tome to go to the groups website to check out the messages I have missed! Guest guest
Pattie/Xan - I'm sorry. I originally replied to Dayna about why I needed it. Here's the situation. There will be a conference this fall that is being hosted by a national PID organization. The conference will be here in the Southeast and I was asked to help coordinate. This week I was asked to submit a list of topics that might be discussed and then we'll work on who is best to invite to discuss them. Guest guest
Gracie, Here is a power point that I used for a presentation at our local state yearly meeting. You'll need to personalize it. I've found it so much easier just to have something to work from. Best of luck,Deane Peck MS.RD.LD/N. From: gracielynn17 <gracielynn17@...>Subject: Conference Topics Date: Thursday, June 11, 2009, 7:48 AM Colleages,I have been asked to speak at a local conference regarding p/o nutrition complications. However, I only see a very small amount of p/o patients; mostly I see pre-op. Does anyone have suggestions for topics that should be addressed? Does anyone have old slides they would be willing to share as a template (thought I'd ask in case any one was feeling very generous).
