Lexi was sponsored by our local Shriner's club as well. I think it depends on what they are willing to help out with. In our case, they reimbursed us for our total airfare from Houston to Erie. We had to coordinate it through the Shriner's Hospital in Erie though and up there had to verify that Lexi was an actual patient. I guess it just depends on how much money they are willing to contribute and what they are willing to reimburse for. Good luck!!

I talked with the local president of our Shriners chapter here in SWVA and he said that they could "sponser" me to go to Greenville, SC but not Erie since its not in my area. Has anyone run into this and what exactly does that mean? Does it mean helping w/extra expenses, etc? Other question-I have no intentions of doing this, but several local chiropractors have offered to try to "help" Evan free of charge w/his torticollis and possibly his scoli-Does anyone use chiropractic tx for their children? Thanks in advance. -Evan's Mom-5mos old yesterday!

Just call Erie...they will get a sponsor for you. I didn't have to deal with any of that because they did it for me over the phone. The one in Greenville doesn't do the casting.

That's exactly what I told the man here- but I wasn't sure about the sponsor thing- we have family all over the country and I figured surely we could come up w/a sponsor if we needed one. That's the first I'd heard of having to have a sponsor- Thanks so much! i don't know if the original message meant she thinks she has to have sponosrshop to actually be treated at a shriner's. that is not the case. we did not have a sponsor........i just made our initial appt way back when over the phone. we did contact our local temple though to see if they would help offset cost. i think it used to be more of a formality to have sponsorship, but not anymore. as far as i know, they will not turn anyone away.

Hi Evan's mum

We live in Vancouver, Canada and have run into the same problem as

you! We left our Ortho here when he wanted to fuse my little girl's

spine at 8 yrs old and refused to cast her!

We now travel to SLC to see Dr D'Astous and we pay all travel and

accomodation costs. I have talked to various Shriner's People

(including the " Main Man " here), and the bottom line for us, is that

they will only pay to send us to the Hospital that they 'cover',

which in our case is Portland OR.

We have used Angel Flights to help us on a couple of occassions - I

believe their info is in the " links " section (to the left of this

page). We have also found the Shriner's Hospital to be very helpful

and accomodating. We try and stay in one of their 'family rooms'

when we can, plus the hospital will pick us up from/ and drive us to

the airport - All this helps keep our costs down.

Of course, all hospital treatment etc is totally free...

As to the other part of your question - I have no experience with

chiropractors, but have read nothing good about them helping

children with scoliosis - IMHO

Happy Belated 5 mos " birthday " Evan!

THANKS so much for the response! I talked to the patient care rep at Erie and she said she would be glad to talk to our local President of the Shrine about them sponsoring us- She explained that a "local" shrine needs to sponsor us. WOW-You have a ways to go don't you ? It's awesome that Shriners is such a supportive organization, I didn' tknow all the care was free- I was going there for the treatment! I know where all our donations will go in the future! How old is your little boy? Is he progressing well? -Evan's Mom! jabostock <jabostock@...> wrote: Hi Evan's mumWe live in Vancouver, Canada and have run into the same problem as you! I wonder if got us a local sponsor and just didn't tell me. I assumed they just used a sponsor from up there. I should ask, so I can send a thank you note.

Hi again

My little Siobhan (promounced Shevonne - its an Irish nmae!) is 6

yrs old now, and she is great! She went into her first cast at 4 yrs

old, we knew we'd missed the biggest growth spurt, but as she has a

diagnosed Connective Tissue Disorder Possible/ Probable Marfan

Syndrome, so we were only hoping to buy as much time as possible for

her to grow.

She has had 4 casts in total, and is currently back in a brace while

we await a date for her to get the VEPTR.

We didn't have any problems getting a sponsor to become a patient

with Shriner's. If you don't actually know a Shriner (which most of

us don't), they will assign one to you/your child. Our problem is

getting the financial help with travel, though reading some of the

emails, it seems to totally depend on the individual Shrine.

Opps, I seem to have written in short novel!

Good Luck with getting financial help, through Shriner's or any of

the other organizations out there.

Let us know when you get an appt. date for Evan.

Sincerely,

Jacki

- We had the same problem, where our local Shrine was willing to sponsor us (help w/ travel expenses) if we went to Houston, but that was it. I can tell you about a few other options that worked for us. The United Way has a program called Any Baby Can. They offered to help us with travel expenses, however we didn't meet their criteria. You ca always give that a shot. Also, what did end up working for us is our insurance. Most insurance companies will cover your travel expenses if you can get your PCM to say it's a necessary treatment and not available within 60 miles of where you live. I won't lie to you and tell you this was easily accomplished. I am very fortuante in the fact that Madison's pedatrician thought it was a great treatment and was totally supportive of her having casting. So battle number one, is getting the PCP recomendation and referal. Battle number two,

you might have to also have an ortho's referal for it. I know that we did and once again I didn't have any troubmle getting that referal. After getting those is when the hard part comes in. Since ths isn't the normal route of treatment it's VERY difficult to convince an insurance company that your child really needs this treatment and is only available for you in Erie. I had to do a lot of reading and research of our policy to have the amunition needed to get claim process going. After that there is a lot of phone calls and I even went to my ins companie's offices in person until someone spoke to me. (I had to sit in the lobby for over 8 hours) If you are willing and able to do all this, good luck! If you need to chat or have any questions, I will try my best. 325-651-9160 Jenjabostock <jabostock@...> wrote: Hi again My little Siobhan (promounced Shevonne - its an Irish nmae!) is 6 yrs old now, and she is great! Thanks so much for the info. I appreciate all the ideas. I ACTUALLY got an offer from the local Shriners to help with travel expenses even to Erie today. I feel so blessed that it worked out, but once my mother-in-law and some other family members talked to them, it seemed to work out! I will keep you all posted. <jenstewart73@...> wrote: - We had the same problem, where our local Shrine was willing to sponsor us (help w/ travel expenses) if we went to Houston, but that was it. Jacki,

I have always wondered the correct pronunciation of Siobhan's name. I love it!
