Has anyone had any experience with thickening aloe vera gel? The

company that I bought mine from says that if I want to thicken it to use

1 tsp. tracaganth(sp?)gum to 250 mls of aloe vera. So, I did a half

recipe last night. Very difficult to mix together. It is thicker, but

not like a commercial aloe vera gel. Any ideas? Have a great day.

Hi Donna, Leanna, and All,

I appreciate your vote of confidence :)!!! But actually, carbomer is

something that I don't carry! I do carry the Conditioning Thickener-crothix

that works well in shampoo and some liquid soaps. Oddly enough, though, I

saw Leanna's post and wanted to mention an exciting new product that I WILL

be carrying that is fantastic for thickening creams, lotions, shampoos, etc.!

It works across a wide range of pH and is compatible with practically all

ingredients. It is a biodegradable, naturally derived product that is based

on cornstarch, but is nothing like what you may be familiar with from the

grocery store. It is somewhat similar to xanthan gum, only much, much nicer

and dissolves immediately in water to create a gel-like effect. In

lotion/cream, it leaves a silky-smooth feel to the skin. I am working on

some formulas for lotion and cream, etc. to put on the website too. The name

of the product is UltraMaize and hopefully I will have it within a week. As

a matter of fact, I have been " playing " with it all day and absolutely love

it in a cream formula that I will be happy to share. This could be the

thickener that we have all been looking for!

Have a good day!

Hi Kristal,

I am not sure exactly which product that you are asking about. The

Conditioning Thickener-crothix has been used to successfully thicken some

liquid soaps---it definitely thickens surfactant based systems very well. It

also has the ability to reduce irritation potential in a soap/surfactant

product. The new product---UltraMaize works to thicken creams, lotions,

shampoo, body wash. It is also a co-emulsifier and provides added stability

to emulsions and leaves skin very soft. It is compatible with most

ingredients across a wide range of pH, so the chances of it thickening

liquid soap are good. As all soaps/products vary, the best thing is to

experiment.

Hopefully this gives some idea.....have a good day!

Leanna,

I've never tried this, it is just a thought off the top of my head, but

you might try some cornstarch. I think that will thicken anything. If

it doesn't work cold, you might try heating a little. Like making an

Aloe Vera Gravy.

Just curious as to why you want to thicken it though?

Have a Great Day!

Leanna: Maybe Vicky has an idea there about cornstarch. Maybe you could

cook up a thickener with cornstarch and water, cool it, and then add it

to your product??????Maybe-----------Holly

I've used corn starch to thicken some shower gel that I had, and it seemed

to work pretty well, but you must use it fairly quickly, as it will begin to

separate.

Thanks for the advice! I see a lot of recipes that call for commercial

aloe vera gel, allready thickened. I just want to be able to try these

recipes and have them turn out some what normal!
