Guest guest
Calcite, I'll bite. You are one funny writer! And no, that was not me at Cub, I was at RAINBOW last week. Hee hee. I really was. As hilarious as your letter was, you really do bring up some serious and interesting points that many of us might want to comment upon. I was actually at Rainbow because my daughter works there and I went to see her. I'm really glad I stop in there periodically because it's always a very interesting experience. She is a checker so I just stand behind her and we talk as she is checking. Cart after cart goes by and I see all sorts of things that I find shocking and quite often sad. 1) At Rainbow, I can't think of any product overlap with the coop 2) Almost every customer at the Lake and Hiawatha store bring WIK or other coupons 3) Poor people buy EXPENSIVE processed, pre-cooked, over-packaged junk food! 4) You get the OVERWHELMING feeling that.... it's true! We ARE what we eat! Some of these shopping carts -and the people who selected it- would make a fantastic REALITY SHOW! 5) I believe in the concepts of the LAW OF ATTRACTION as expressed in the movie THE SECRET. We attract what we are thinking about. Therefore I don't shop --and will not shop-- at Cub and I do shop at the coop not because I'm elitist, not because I'm rich, not because I want to show off, but because I WANT to attract health, a healthy earth, healthy farmers, and happy plants and animals. Shopping is a VOTE for what you want to create, it's not about money or ego, really. When I'm in a bad supermarket like Cub (or in a discount store) I feel like crap.... When I'm in the coop, I feel GOOD. there it is..... Will
Guest guest
I have to agree with Will here first and foremost. I fell like CRAP in that store too!! Just for fun the last time I was there I decided to walk down what was obviously the " ice cream section. " There it was in all its glory, 33 yards (over 100 feet - I walked it off) of tub after tub of ice cream! I walked by once thinking that there probably was ice cream and maybe some other frozen " food " in that side of the isle too, but no....only ice cream. I thought I read in the book " Fast Food Nation " that over 90% of the retail space in your avg supermarket is devited to processed food. Knowing this, you'd be hard pressed to find any food with any vitality in it. How sad is it that it's an actuall challenge find real food in a grocery store. As Pollan says, " Vote with your fork! Guest guest
Jo, I think you are doing a fantastic job shopping on a budget! You've given people a good " shopping list " of what can be found at Cub. It's hard to imagine getting by with $130 for 6. I was talking to Jim Carboneau yesterday and we were comparing food expenditures and we both realized that, having raised all our kids, we can splurge more than most people. We agreed that food was the most expensive thing in our iives. We both agreed on how LUCKY we are to be able to eat so well. Neither of us waste food, nor are we " gourmands " but we can feel good with what we grow, buy and cook, plus it is delicious! We took a farm road trip together yesterday, and eating wasn't even the focus at all but LISTEN TO WHAT WE GOT TO EAT: good Mexican food, raw Jersey milk, raw Jersey butter, raw Jersey cream, organic coffee, organic unpasteurized Viking Chili Pepper beer, MVV's natural hot dogs, Legacy chocolate truffles (wow!), home-brewed kombucha, MVV coconut/ nutritional yeast popcorn, and home-made trail mix. It was A GOOD DAY! Life is good, Will
Guest guest
I shop at Cub too and you absolutely can find good food there. I'm in the southern suburbs and I prefer the Apple Valley Cub above all of the others. They have a very good organic and natural foods section and I'm usually able to do quite a bit of my shopping there. It is dismaying if you wander thru the aisles looking at all of the crap but I don't waste my time. I have very specific things that I get and I know exactly where to find them so I don't even look at any of the other stuff. I have almost no luck at Rainbow Foods. I have heard that there are a couple of good ones out there that have a good natural selection but I've never seen one and that Cub is close to us and to Valley Natural Foods which is also always on our shopping stop. It all depends on the Cub you're at and how much you're willing to see the good stuff and leave the bad. Of course you can go into almost any store and get aggravated at all of the packaged and nasty stuff that they have and yes, people do buy it but why waste your time and energy doing that and who does it help? Don't bother! Krista Krista Boos Creative Memories Consultant 952-707-1263 babymonkeytoes@... Guest guest
I make weekly trips to Lakewinds in Minnetonka for my produce. Inevitably, I forget something and since we mostly consume produce, it is usually that item I run back out for. But to run to Minnetonka from where I am at in Plymouth is not terribly feasible usually, so I have been running to a local store that is touted as being healthy (I am withholding the name of the store in case my negative comments about the store are hurtful to someone). That store has me grossed out about produce. When I am in their produce section, I feel wilted and brown and half dead just like the produce. I also have purchased expired dairy items from their store (butter and cream). I have finally given up on that store and now run to Cub for those items I forget at Lakewinds. I feel much better in the Cub produce section that I do in that " healthy: store across the street with the icky produce that my family will not enjoy consuming. I would rather buy at Lakewinds, but when that is not feasible at certain times, I am Ok with Cub, especially the one in Maple Grove that has a lot of OG produce. Rainbows makes me feel poor and processed though. I do feel the same about that store. Someone has mentioned that Cub has more expensive prices than Lakewinds, I too have observed that at times as well. And I also should point out that all Cubs are not the same. Some have an incredible selection of OG produce with an obvious high turn over. Others are icky with not many choices that have obviously been sitting around for a long time. Guest guest
I know of a woman who makes goat butter from churning her lightly-kefired goat milk. I have bought butter from her - very good. her website is http://kefirlady.com/ If you'd like to contact her, her email address is given there. so you can make butter from goats milk without a cream separator.
