Guest guest
Does anyone on this list buy local organic potatoes? If so from whom? Do you buy them a year at a time? How do you store them? Guest guest
Hi Charlie: We get (and love!) our potatoes from a farm called Driftless Organics: http://www.driftlessorganics.com/ They are located in the Soldiers Grove, WI area & attend farmers markets in (I believe) the Minnetonka, MN, Viroqua, WI & South West + Downtown Madison, WI areas. Not only do they grow a variety of really great potatoes, but their carrots are also fantastic. This winter was the 1st time I ever tried to do a winter storage of potatoes so I went with just one box (about 25 pds) to see how its done. While we were doing great initially, I think the bitter cold of February was too much for them but it was our fault, not the potatoes. We didn't store them in as good a place as we thought because it got too cold for them & they froze & then when they thawed, I failed to catch it & so they spoiled. Fortunately we were about 3/4 of the way through them anyway. Up til then they were holding up just fine. Next year we're hoping to have a 'root cellar' completed in our basement & will use that. > > Does anyone on this list buy local organic potatoes? If so from whom? Do you > buy them a year at a time? Guest guest
I grow all of my potatoes instead of buy them. I keep them in a box or paper bag in my root cellar. During the harvest in the fall, I set some aside for " seed " . I keep them all over winter, yes, they do tend to start sprouting in spring, but then we quickly eat them up. I don't have potatoes in the summer unless I planted some early potatoes or break down and buy some. Obviously there aren't too many people with root cellars these days, but find a dark, cook, preferably damp corner of a basement. Lynn > Does anyone on this list buy local organic potatoes?
