Guest guest
Hi , My three year old has AMC with scoliosis. The idea that wearing a cast can " cause " AMC is impossible. It is a muscle condition that a child is born with, not something that can come on later in life. I believe what they are trying to say is that most AMC children are rigid and have very short tendons. Such as when someone breaks a limb and they wear a cast for a long period of time, with no movement, thus once the cast is off, the tendons are shorter and the movement in the limb is less. However, it is usually recooperated once they do PT or just basic movements again. However, with true AMC, the muscles are actually what one doctor told me " impossible to recooperate 100% because something is wrong with them from inside " . My child has worn two plaster of paris casts done by a doctor here in Barcelona Spain who trained under Dr. Mehta. He is in favor of the casting for Santi. Not all kids are good candidates with AMC. Santi is incredibly flexible and his spine bends easily. If he was rigid, he would not have casted him. We have had great success, 50 degrees down to 23 degrees in two casts. Don´t worry about the muscles while your child is in the cast. Your doctor will not cast if there are any doubts about the muscle strength of your child. Santi has done wonderful in the casts even with AMC and weakened muscles. Weakened muscles after wearing any kind of cast is common but recuperation is quick and easy, with AMC it is not quick and it is not easy. Thanks for your interest , being informed is what makes us great moms..Good luck, Kelli and Santiago - > > > > > > > > > > > > > __________________________________________________ >
