Guest guest
Odd that we were in the middle of discussing the issue of SLAVERY when I happened to take a break from shoveling last night to see this beautiful and inspiriing movie. (we saw it at the Lagoon theater). The story is England back in 1797 when the British Empire ruled the world. The backstory was that the entire empire was fueled on the bent back of African slaves. Nobody at all really wanted to talk about that! One lone MP, WILLIAM WILBERFORCE was struck by the totality of the injustice after his excursion into studying Nature and God led him to get virtual telepathic connections to those in the world that are suffering. He campaigned fiercely to pass a bill for ABOLITION until he lost his health and sanity. What really struck me was the pragmatism and stubborn refusal of the other 400 MPs to even examine any details of the horrors and soul costs of slavery. All arguments to stop it were quashed when the guardians of the Empire considered it would all be lost to France, Holland and others who WOULD continue to slave. Every MP had his own clever way to remain in DENIAL. Wilberforce was humilated, chastised, and shunned, and, get this, he was even treated as a SEDITIONIST and could have gotten hung! (substitute the word " TERRORIST " today). The DENIAL process in government is so true today. Look at Global warming, Fair Trade, GMOs, pesticides, globalization, factory farming, logging, oil wars, and the list goes on and on. Back to the movie, GO SEE IT. It will give you hope. It's about connecting to your SPIRITUALITY, your FAITH, and your LOVED ONES to guide and clarify your passions. This is where we get the strength to do battle. You wlll learn the true source of the song Amazing Grace, and will never be able to hear it again in the same way. PS Bring plenty of kleenex for this one!
