Here are some of the appointments that I have with clients pre-operatively Nutrition Assessment (only) This typically takes me about 45 minutes. It is PMH, diet history, physical activity and an evaluation of if the patient knows what are required lifestyle changes after bariatric surgery. If a patient cannot explain the importance of lifestyle then I do a small amount of education Nutrition Assessment for Medically Supervised diet: This is about 1 hr and 15 min. This is the same intake as a nutrition assessment but we also set a 5-10% BW goal for weight loss over 6 mo. Then I complete diet education on a prescribed calorie level and discuss physical activity. Pt is then put into a 6 month group class that discusses all of the post-op principals Pre-Op diet education: I complete this 2-3 weeks prior to surgery. This usually takes 1+ hours. I review in detail the diet guidelines and recommendations for lifestyle changes. This is a reinforcing discussion after patients attended a new patient education seminar in which I discuss very briefly the diet outline. Patients need to hear the diet information more than once....I do basic education at first meeting so they know what they are getting into and then we do a class when surgery is only a couple weeks away (they are listening better at this time) and in the class I go over much more detail. -----Original Message-----From: [mailto: ]On Behalf Of heidi.gianarisSent: Tuesday, February 26, 2008 7:27 AM Subject: bariatric nutrition evaluations How much time do most dietians take to complete the bariaric nutriion evaluation for pre-op patients? Is it usually a 1 hour appt? 1/2 hour appt? It this usually completed in more than 1 visit? How many times before surgery are pre-op pts being seen by the dietitian to complete the bariatric nutrition evaluation to assess current eating habits/assess pre-op changes/review the post-op diet guidelines/etc. Our program would like to see me complete the initial nutrition evaluation in a 30 minutue appointment. The post-op dietary guidelines/recommnedations would be discussed at a separate appointment in a group setting. Is this what any other programs are doing? Thanks in advance.
