Guest guest
Hello everyone, I'm new to this group too, though I've met some of you personally through the Rochester WAPF. I need your collection wisdom on a how to handle an imminent birth (my due date is Feb. 24). I was recently informed by my OB Dr. that I'm a carrier for Group B Strep, so I " have to " have a penicillin IV during labor to reduce the 1/2-2% chance of the GBS infecting our baby as she passes through the birth canal. I don't like the idea of that, but would like to know what I can do to be proactive in reducing even that remote chance of infecting our baby even more. I've started (3 days ago) taking 1000mg each of garlic and vit. C at the recommendation of an article I read online, but am not sure I'm on the right track. Another friend recommended I take a silver supplement as an antibiotic (called Cell- ver, made by Eniva), but I'm a little leary of ingesting silver based on conflicting reports of it's safety. Speaking of silver, the other issues my husband and I have to decide are concerning the routine Vitamin K injections and silver eye ointment they give newborns. Any thoughts on these? Any other traditional wisdom I should consider before labor sets in? Thanks! (from the Rochester WAPF)
Guest guest
Hi , I just had a baby boy at home 3 weeks ago. I did test negative for the GBS but decided not to do the antibiotics and still do a homebirth if I was positive - in Europe they do NOT do antibiotics routine for GBS. There are other options, and I would consult a naturopath or midwife that leans that direction to find out more. I didn't do the eye ointment because not only was I not at risk for an STD, the baby wasn't at risk of acquiring a hospital infection. I didn't do the vitamin K because it is synthetic, and there are some thoughts that it is linked to certain childhood conditions. I may have reconsidered if the birth was traumatic. Instead I took vitamin K drops myself to supplement for my breastmilk, starting a month beforehand, in case my diet was deficient. God didn't create babies to be deficient in vitamin K at birth, that's my opinion. If they don't have much in their system it's for a reason! The baby will make vitamin K in his/her gut out of the bacteria from your breasts if you are nursing. Good luck! Guest guest
Sorry in advance, dr intervention is kind of a soap box for me. 1. GBS - From what I understand, we are all carriers of this it just depends on where it was at when they tested you. Because you tested positive at 28 weeks (is that when they do it?) doesn't mean you'll be positive when you go into labor. I had a friend whose midwife let her be on a low dosage of oral penicillin for about 2 wks before her birth and called it good. I don't know how fast they get the lab results, but you could request that they test again. I know you said something about garlic (read it too fast, don't remember), but a midwife mine knows was doing a kind of " case study " and had women insert it vaginally for a few nights before their GBS test and not one of them came back positive. That's what I did and I was negative as well. 2. Vitamin K - Babies are naturally born with a low vitamin K level. I have to imagine it's for a reason. Vit K levels peak around 8 days, which incidentally is when God told the Jews to circumcize. My midwife says she carries it with her, but rarely uses it. I would suggest forgoing it unless you see some reason to have it. 3. Do you have chlamydia? Gonorrhea? If you answer no to those questions, then you don't need it. Check out wikipedia.com to see all the other things it is used for. Simply unnecessary if you don't have one of the previously mentioned STDs. Hope that helps you! Blessings on your birth! ~Virginia _________________________________________________________________ FREE online classifieds from Windows Live Expo – buy and sell with people you know http://clk.atdmt.com/MSN/go/msnnkwex0010000001msn/direct/01/?href=http://expo.li\ ve.com?s_cid=Hotmail_tagline_12/
