Need M.D. To request SSI Disability

Outpatient whose brother was severely injured in a motor vehicle accident a number of years ago. Apparently he is struggling with cluster headaches and is not fully functional mentally. He is living in a slum area of Los Angeles and has been unable to hold a job. He is moving to Portland to live with his brother and his brother is wondering if he could get disability benefits.

I told him that I have a challenge with disability benefits in that my wife has four counseling clients on disability for mental issues and none of them are in a great hurry to get off of the program even though they may have made progress. The other issue is that when someone moves up from welfare or disability income level, they lose their medical coverage but do not typically earn enough to purchase health insurance. It is obviously a self-perpetuating situation.

That being said, this seems like a guy who needs the support. For my part I am going to try to get him a volunteer position at a large church nearby to do maintenance work which is adjusted to his ability. I’ll also see if I can get anywhere with his headaches with some regular care. My experience is that pro bono patients do not seem to respond to care. I don’t know why it is but I am suspicious that something which has a price tag of zero produces like benefits.

If anyone knows a doctor who can or will prescribe this ability, please let me know.
