Reuters) - An updated edition of a mental health bible for doctors may include diagnoses for "disorders" such as toddler tantrums and binge eating, experts say, and could mean that soon no-one will be classed as normal.

Reuters) - Having good social relationships -- friends, marriage or children -- may be every bit as important to a healthy lifespan as quitting smoking, losing weight or taking certain medications, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday.People with strong social relationships were 50 percent less likely to die early than people without such support, the team at Brigham Young University in Utah found. They suggest that policymakers look at ways to help people maintain social relationships as a way of keeping the population healthy."A lack of social relationships was equivalent to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day," psychologist nne Holt-Lunstad, who led the study, said in a telephone interview. Her team conducted a meta-analysis of studies that examine social relationships and their effects on health. They looked at 148 studies that covered more than 308,000 people for their analysis, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Medicine at www.plosmedicine.org.

Hello both

In my memory, it was when skillmix first arose and organisations like Cambridge wanted to replace 'health visiting services' with a different 'child and family services' that the old HVA checked the legislation. If Margaret does not recall this, perhaps I am wrong. I do hope so! Thank you for your forensic interest, Woody!

Hansard has some interesting debates(e.g. about the employment rights of 750 hospital almoners or freedom of GPsto offer homeopathy) but I did not spot anything yet on health visitors inthe debates or the cabinet papers that are online.Best wishes,Woody.________________________________From: on behalf of Margaret ButtigiegSent: Tue 27/07/2010 19:47 Subject: Re: Going back to Basics re developing a model ofhealth visiting practiceHI Woody and I need to think about this a bit more but there is also a section in the"yellow peril" or as the Dh would know it - the GP fundholding guidance inthe early 90s - which addresses something similar and makes a simila quote.I found a copy last week in my sorting and will look and post as I think itmay all be very important if HV and SN go back to local authorities as ismutedMargaret developing a model of health visiting practice[1Attachment]Dear All I spotted this on the CPHVA website. It can feel as if the CNOsAction Planfor Health Visiting has gone quiet, but they have actually beenbeaveringaway behind the scenes, trying to develop a way of explaining the'how' ofhealth visiting. The idea is to have a 'model' of some kind (probablyapowerpoint, or web site or similar), that can be accessed by thoseoutsidethe profession who need to understand in a nutshell what the keyfeaturesare, how health visitors operate and (most important, I think) whysomethings are best carried out by health visitors and cannot be handedtocolleagues and team members. I missed most of the early work, whichhappenedwhilst I was off sick in the winter, but attended the last couple ofworkshops that were jointly facilitated by Anne Rowe (who iscurrentlyworking with the FNP) and Crispin Day (Director of the Centre forParent andChild Support). It is now at a point that is ready for 'piloting,' soanyonewho can get to this workshop in London will be very welcome, I'msure. Ithink the next plan is to 'road test' it around the country, whichwillhappen over the autumn. best wishes Cowleysarahcowley183btinternet<mailto:sarahcowley183%40btinternet.com> http://myprofile.cos.com/S124021COn<http://myprofile.cos.com/S124021COn> Email has been scanned for viruses by Altman Technologies' emailmanagementservice <http://www.altman.co.uk/emailsystems<http://www.altman.co.uk/emailsystems> > ~-- EMERGING EXCELLENCE: In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, more than 30% of our submissions were rated as 'Internationally Excellent' or 'World-leading'.
