Guest guest
Jan, I think our lobbyists, both Vern and have that information, and since stated she would be able to help both Democrat and Republican campaigns, I figured that she would do that. Other than the $500.00 spent on Dudley, I haven't heard of any other expenditures to Republican campaigns, though I am sure there are a lot out there. I really don't want this to become a " D " vs " R " argument. I just want to make sure we don't fall back into the trap we did in the 80's. That being a one-sided funding PAC. And I think I speak for the rest of the profession when I say we don't want to lose what Vern has worked so hard to accomplish up to now. Sunny stated it very well, the Senators and Representatives feel very comfortable working with Vern, and feel good that he really knows what he is talking about. That is the political capital I was speaking about, not cash, just hard fought for and well earned trust. Vern being a practicing physician, and being able to stand up in a committee meeting and explain how things really work is priceless. No matter how much a lay lobbyist would try to do this, the legislators would see right through the effort and we would lose the argument. Again, I would like to state that I haven't agreed with everything Vern has done, but at least I know he has our best interests in mind, and isn't doing it for the money. Not that making money is a bad thing, don't get me wrong. Grice, DC Albany, OR
Guest guest
Ron, I agree with you and am glad you posted this. I'm also an OCA member and would like to offer a suggestion. I think it would benefit the entire association if would post personally what projects she's working on either solo or in concert with Vern. They could work together preparing announcements (reviewed by each other) and presented to the profession, jointly? I think it should be posted to all the profession, including non-members. This encourages and invites new membership. When non-members see what the association has to offer the entire state profession, it is a selling point. Denial of information to non-paying colleagues may serve to isolate and divide us. I think inclusion and the sharing of information is a good selling point. I would like to offer this suggestion to our state assoication leaders. I'd like to hear comments from both presidents on this topic. Thanks for you time in helping further the entire professions survival and growth. Minga Guerrero DC Gresham OR (LOTS OF INFO ABOUT ELIZABETH MAZZARA --our new PR contactor & our other OCA Lob Charlie, I agree with your conclusion about where our money is going, and what Vern has done in the past. There was $500 spent at the Dudley campaign stop in Gresham if I am not mistaken, and it was my understanding, having been a guest at that event, that our money was going to be spent equally between the two parties. After speaking with , it is my opinion that she is quite capable to Lobby, but she is also an unabashed liberal Democrat, according the her own statements. I worry this will color her opinions, when, as a lobbyist, she can't allow any personal bias to enter into her work. I want to make it clear that I have nothing against liberal Democrats, we just can't afford to have anything go wrong with our progress over the last 5 or so years, thanks almost entirely to the tireless efforts and hard work by Vern Saboe for which I believe he was horribly under paid. As far as what Vern has done, I have been invited by him on several occasions to attend both Democrat and Republican fund raisers for personal candidates and brought my personal contribution to both, just because he asked. This money did not go to the party at large, but for their personal campaign. I think this kind of money, checks written to personal candidates, goes a lot farther than throwing our money at the statewide party for which we will get very little recognition. And, if we remember back to the late 80's and 90's, it wasn't the Republicans that threw us under the bus in worker's comp. Vern has made great strides in getting the Republicans, and Democrats to listen, and understand our position and what we really need to have in order to practice. I know for a fact, after speaking to many Senators and Representatives, that they have tremendous respect for Vern, mainly because he is there with the information they ask for. And lest any of you think I go blindly where Vern asks, I am in total opposition to his endorsement of Kitzhaber for Governor. I get worried from the tone of some of the posts it seems that the OCA is trying to move away from what Vern has accomplished. We can hardly afford to go back to the 80's, and lose the great relationships that have been forged, not only by Vern, but all of us that have attended the Chiropractic Day at the Capital, spending our personal time and money at our home, or colleagues home for small coffee and dessert type fund raisers and at other local candidate events. Lastly I would second the notion that Ellizabeth can, and should, post on the list, or at least submit her activities to someone to have them posted on the list for all to read. The fact that she is an employee of the OCA is a mute point. If this was a problem, then we wouldn't have any OCA employees posts here. As far as us members getting membership emails, I haven't seen any since she has been hired, and I have been a member for many years. This is what I see happening, and my opinions only. And as a member of the OCA I want our political capital that we have built up over the last 5 or so years to be expanded, not thrown away.
