Guest guest
Hi Dr Minga and all: Apparently there is quite a buzz going about our new PR/Media and lobbyist hire, Mazzara. replaced 2 previous lobbyists ( Mason and Bob Oleson) and a PR firm that had done nothing....... We are so fortunate to now have a person that can multi task for the Chiropractors in Oregon and specifically the Oregon Chiropractic Assoc members. Unfortunately, your question about her posting to the List Serve would be OCA defeating....... She works for the OCA membership not the profession at large. She is paid from the OCA budget and information that she puts out is for our members !!!! With regards to your comments about her being a "new hire" she came on board in June. She made a very impressive presentation to the OCA Executive Board and upon their multiple meetings to discuss these items they decided that she was a person that could help us get things done. She has an "office" in the "OCA office" and is working full time for us. She has already been very hard at work with a 3 tiered strategy that was presented to our OCA Executive Board and then to the OCA membership in my June/July "Member only newsletter" that everyone should have received because we actually mailed it to the entire profession along with the new "ChiroPac" information. Those 3 key efforts were listed as : 1. Association building == getting new members and coordinating efforts state wide -- districts etc. 2. Government affairs == legislative / lobbying efforts 3. Communications plan == "branding" and community outreach and revamping our website After trying 2 other PR firms that did absolutely nothing for their 6 month contracts -- has jumped on board and has us moving full speed ahead. She has been organizing districts and helping with outreach in the membership to get heads for the new districts. She is emailing our OCA Board members almost daily but certainly weekly with her progress on numerous projects. Just today, she scheduled the 2 speakers for the Salem District meeting that will be held on Wed. Sept 1st 6:30-8:30 at the Salem / Newport Bay restaurant: Carol -- Director of HITOC (the oversight committee for the state IT) and Clayton Gillett -- Director for O-CHIN the regional extension service for the on the ground provider training and outreach on IT for the state Tonight she is attending a "Brew for Wu" in downtown Portland (event for Oregon's US Congressman Wu) and tomorrow evening will be at the Senate Democrat Leadership Function that the OCA/ChiroPac has been given a sponsor spot (at no charge --because of her past activity with that) and was personally invited by Sen. Devlin himself. She attended an event with me for Republican Dudley / candidate for Governor a few weeks ago and we (Dr Don, , and I) went to an event at Sen. 's home in Salem that she had a personal invitation to a few weeks ago. For those of you that have been talking about her experience : She was an honors graduate at Oregon State University in Philosophy and Political Science (double major) She got her masters degree from Washington State Univ in Political Science and her PhD also from WSU in Political Science. She then taught at both WSU and WSU/Vancouver -- teaching "Congressional Politics", "Constitutional Law", "Judicial Process" and others. She was the Legislative and Communications Director for the OR Bureau of Labor & Industries for 1 1/2 years -- doing all the media outreach and legislative strategies and lobbying. She then worked for 1 year with PacWest (a top tier firm in Oregon) on Health Care Reform and was their Policy Analyst. She helped write the HB2009 with Tom Burns regarding the health care reform in Oregon. From there she has been a "fundraiser" for Democratic candidates and has been so successful that she is always getting called to be part of events throughout the Portland area and our State. From what I have already seen -- she is constantly reading and reviewing hundreds and hundreds of pages (thousands of pgs) that have come out of the Health Authority and Oregon Health Policy Board (HA and OHPB). The final recommendations are just being released -- she has attended nearly all of these meetings and the sub-committee meetings that are relevant to us. In addition, she has been reviewing the 800 pages of the Administrative Rules from the federal HHS (Health & Human Services) with regards to the "meaningful use for health IT". She has also attended numerous political events for candidates over the past 2 months and has had the OCA as a sponsor to several of these events. Everyone knows her !!! I have personally attended several of these events with her and they seem to gather around her -- She has been a significant player in the Democratic party in Oregon and as well as her parents who are very well known politically in the "D" party. She holds her own in this arena. Last, she has helped to start the new "ChiroPac" and wrote the 1st "ChiroPac Newsletter" that went out to everyone. The 2nd "ChiroPac Newsletter" is being mailed out the end of this week and donors should be receiving it by the first of next week. Finally, we all know Vern. The entire profession knows Vern.... But this is also "POLITICS" !!!! Vern is an "R" and everyone knows it even though he has developed many good relationships with the legislators in the "D" party. He has been there for us in the past and continues to be there for us moving forward....... that has never been a question!!! Dr. Vern Saboe continues as a key lobbyist, colleague, and friend. He speaks to the list serve as himself (a DC -- in Oregon) which is what the list serve is about. He does not speak for the OCA or its board on the list serve. Vern is a powerful force for us in Oregon Chiropractic and that is not a question that is purely a statement of fact. Because Vern is part of this profession and has been for many years he brings a strong background and ability to be able to answer questions for many DC's on the list serve -- but that is not what he is paid to do. He is paid to represent the OCA in the legislative arena, as our lobbyist and is able to give professional testimony on our behalf. As we all know, he is also in private practice and as such we need more than just Vern to be our advocate and lobbyist. He cannot do it all alone................. has reached out recently to Vern on several occasions for events and they will be working together at times on key issues. For now -- Vern's focus will continue to be as it has been for the past several years on Workers Comp and PI. That is his passion. That is his forte....in addition, to being an excellent physician... is a "D" (as were the 2 lobbyists she replaced)..... While she too has many relationships with "Republican's" they all know that she is a democrat. 's focus will be on association building, our PR, and overall health care reform etc. We are certainly blessed to now have 2 key advocates from both sides of the aisle -- working for our members and paid by the Oregon Chiropractic Association. IF YOU ARE NOT A MEMBER THAN YOU ARE NOT SUPPORTING EITHER OF THESE OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE WORKING FOR THE OCA and it's OCA membership. Or let us know about work that she's doing with you, Vern or her solo efforts? I like you communications with us.I'm happy to post this to the state association as well. Thanks,Minga Fw: Responding to your message F.Y.I., we all need to be contacting our two US Senators and Congressmen.....Cheers, Vern Saboe Responding to your message Dear Vern, Thank you for contacting me to share your views about the Chiropractic Care Available to All Veterans Act of 2009 (S. 1204).
