HI

You will need to consider it carefully and may need to do so with the support of the Union but you would have every right to use your NMC Professional Code of conduct to argue that practice is unsafe both for clients and for yourselves.

There is something in the Coalition government documents about the need to look after staff and it sounds as if you organization is also failing on this point.

Subject: RE: job freezes

Dear Senate – on subject of job freezes and covering work of colleagues who are long term sick or retired. Given that our Trust, North Yorks and York have admitted that there has been a serious disinvestment in health visiting and school nursing over the past five years, where do people think we stand on refusing to take up work when we are already very over stretched. Has any HV or SN refused to do work on the grounds of their own health or safety or on the basis that their practice will be unsafe? To date we have always plugged the gaps but personally I don’t think I can do this any longer without being unsafe in my practice or becoming ill. Any advice appreciated. Niamh Hanlon.

Is there anything I can do about this? As an independent speaker (who spends a great deal of time in Tadcaster, near York with my partner) can I speak up for the needs of health visitors, etc. and the impact of postnatal depression if left untreated?

Elaine Hanzak is a deeply charismatic speaker. Her story is as relevant to mainstream business as it is to healthcare professionals because it involves an issue that challenges every aspect of our perspective and latent discrimination regarding mental illness. 'This was the most down to earth exploration of postnatal depression and puerpural psychosis that I have heard in all my professional life. It has highlighted for me that Midwives need to work more closely on a one to one with childbearing women in order to get to know them, build up a great degree of mutual trust and confidence, which will help to ameliorate the effects of both postnatal depression and puerpural psychosis.' Hi

Thanks for your support. We've been told that the North Yorkshire and York PCT’s plan to get all the Health Visitors to take on the role of the School Nurse in all infant and junior schools, without any extra resource, is still to go ahead, despite the job freeze and possible redundancies. This is in order for the trust to make the £12.5 million that they are in deficit for. We will keep on campaigning against these plans, unfortunately so far it’s all falling on deaf ears of our managers! Their response is that they have to do something as the school health service is inadequate. Their way to fix it , which is to also make the Health Visiting teams inadequate is beyond belief!

Best Wishes

Dear

It certainly sounds as though you are all having a very distressing time, and I do feel for the families, as well. Good luck with your continued campaign.

best wishes

Dear SenateYou may remember last week I informed you all of North Yorkshire and York PCT plans to make Health Visitors take on the work of the School Nurse in all infant and junior schools, as the trust didn't have enough school nurses and didn't have any money to get any more. The situation now has become much worse with job freezes and redundancies. Our trust are in 12 million deficit. We have been told that we are emergency working, ie prioritising what we are and are not doing (post natal groups are out of the window!). I haven't found out yet where the 0-19 plans are within this, but it is an inadequate service which will now be offered and will only get worse.( So much for this government ring fencing front line staff, we will be lucky if any of us have any jobs left at this rate! )Best Wishes
