I did take a look today and saw some post on Labdanum so thought that I would respond... We carry two Labdanum Absolutes and Labdanum Gum (all in stock but our web site is a bit out of date). I use the term Ambreine for the two Labdanum Absolutes that we carry. Ambreine is not a specific term, and Arctander uses the term entirely differently. The Ambreines that we carry are Labdanum Absolutes and not distilled from Labdanum Gum. Labdanum Gum is however the starting point for making all of the other Labdanum products. Some manufacturers in Europe use the Ambriene term for some of their high quality (more highly refined) Labdanum products and that is how I am using it. So, I use the name Ambreine to distinguish the less refined Labdanum Absolutes from the more refined Labdanum Absolutes. The less refined are more viscous, darker in color and not soluble (or only slightly soluble) in fixed oils, whereas the more refined ones are less viscous, lighter in color and mostly soluble in fixed oils. I know the Ambreine term can cause confusion but since I have been using it so long I just keep using it. Cistus eo is another critter altogether as have been suggested by and others. I have almost carried it many times, but it is pretty pricey (several times the price of Labdanum Absolute) and it has a much more limited use in perfumery than labdanum. It is also a slightly obscure aromatherapy oil (used in skin preperations). Cistus eo has a hard to love aroma, but some are far nicer than others, so shop around if you are looking for one with an attractive aroma. And expect to pay triple the cost of a good Labdanum Absolute. Labdanum Gum is great for using to make incense. Labdanum Gum and the less refined Labdanum Absolutes are not so great for tincturing (for perfumery) because they discolor the alcohol (and hence the perfume) very dark. Enjoy! I have Cistus (wild) which I have been using. Yes, the aroma is, whoah, very tenaceous and when I first tried it and used it gingerly in a blend it was so powerful it took it over completely.. In an amber accord I have been utterley delighted with it. But on its own restraint or tincture is definately called for..
