http://pages.prodigy.com/lifewithmg/

-----------------------

TIDBIT: Myasthenia Gravis is an auto-immune disease which is characterized by fluctuating,

sometimes fatal, muscle weakness. The body's immune system, in the form of antibodies, attacks and

damages the nerve signal reception areas on the muscles - causing a breakdown in communication

between nerve and muscle; this results in a loss of effectiveness of the muscle. To someone affected

by Myasthenia Gravis it means that symptoms vary according to the amount of activity undergone, the

onset of infection or stress of any kind. Activities taken for granted by most of us become

difficult or even impossible at times for myasthenics. Simple things like eating food, lifting arms,

speaking to friends or laughing. (mgauk.org)

TIDBIT: The most surprising feature of the inflammatory response in rheumatoid arthritis is not

that it occurs but that it does not resolve. The persistence of the chronic inflammatory response in

conjunction with ongoing joint destruction is an all too familiar finding in many patients with

rheumatoid arthritis. Despite the use of effective anti-inflammatory agents and disease modifying

drugs, a significant proportion of patients with rheumatoid arthritis continue to have resistant

disease. Complete clinical remission is unusual for more than six months and a formal cure of the

disease remains elusive. (Ann Rheum Dis)

Fibromyalgia Workshop: The Next Advances

November 11-12, 2004 - Washington, D.C.

Joint collaboration between the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and National Institute of

Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIH/NIAMS) together with leading scientists and

researchers will be presenting latest findings and exploring future ideas to advance our

understanding of Fibromyalgia.

A key integrative focus of the workshop is on the role of non-nociceptive/central pain. This will be

a forum for an attempt to integrate and cross fertilize biological and

psychosocial-behavioral-environmental research and energize the interdisciplinary research agenda to

lead to the next major advances in the field.

The meeting is open to all interested person (clinicians, scientists, patients, patient advocacy

representatives, industry). Continuing Education is available: This activity has been approved for

AMA PRA credit. For a list of Faculty Presenters and more information, please click on the link

TIDBIT: Many conditions can be confused with fibromyalgia. Patients with the condition often have

these patients if the pain is modified by palpation of the occipital attachment of the trapezius

muscle in cases of headaches or by palpation of the mid-pectoralis major muscle in cases of chest

painRecognition of fibromyalgia is important to avoid unnecessary testing and ineffective therapy.

TIDBIT: To avoid the headache and queasy stomach that often accompany use of alcoholic beverages,

try eating some honey. Honey supplies fructose, which helps the body metabolize alcohol and reduces

hangover symptoms. Honey on a cracker or piece of toast, before or after drinking, may prevent a

hangover. If you do wind up with a headache, drink fluids that contain minerals and salts that

alleviate dehydration. For example, a cup of bouillon replaces fluid and usually does not cause

nausea. And the vasoconstrictor effects of the old standby, coffee, actually do shorten headaches

for many people. (postgradmed.com)

TIDBIT: For patients who can't swallow pills, drugs that do not have an elixir form can mean

trouble. The patients must try to break or crush he pills into sections. I recommend three solutions

grinder works best. It grinds any pill into a fine powder, which patients can thensprinkle onto any

palatable food. (postgradmed.com)
