, thanks to Debenham's cafeteria I had a rare read of the Daily Express this Thursday:

a youngish Ms. Iwenofu RHV gives a good pitch for future health visitors 'Working as a visitor is one of the NHS's most rewarding roles' (On the front line for better health, page 59).

If she consented, she might make a very good 'face' of Regenerating Health Visiting - no cardigan but lots of enthusiasm?

Apropos 'efficiency', she is quoted "I work with a number of families that have more complex needs: domestic violence, mental health problems, substance misuse, overcrowding and deprivation'. Having lived in Whitechapel, I would guess many of her children are growing up with all of these complexities: sounds like a case for a certain type of well-trained, imaginative professional starting with H.....

Ciao,

Hi WoodyThanks for posting this information. Yes, I saw this depressing article too. It read like a Meridian advert, I thought. One of the points they seem to have missed, is that those PCTs who were being so-called 'efficient' might actually be being extrmely ineffective. In the dim distant past, my first lesson in quality assurance included something along the lines of 'first you must do the right thing' (ie, be effective) because if you are doing the wriong thing, it does not matter if you are 'doing it right' (ie, 'being efficient'). In fact, you might even be making matters worse, if you are simply being efficient at doing some thing harmful, like widening inequalities by denying additional time and support to families that need them.best wishes

Dear Senate and SIG,The HSJ has one of those heartsink articles this week (on the ProductiveCommunity Services programme that begins this October). Here is an'efficiencies' quote:SHAs have reported cost per health visitor contact ranges from as little as£25 to £100 per patient. A number are talking to provider arms to see whethersome provider functions could be performed on a regional basis.Words like Urban/Rural, Simple needs/Complex needs, Choice of multiple localresources/health visitor or no one... all pass through my mind. Does anyone(post-Korner) except the NHS Institute believe that there is a standardhealth visitor 'contact'?Woody. -- EMERGING EXCELLENCE: In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, more than 30% of our submissions were rated as 'Internationally Excellent' or 'World-leading' .
