DeShaw obtains giant verdict

I wanted to let you know that on July 2, DeShaw obtained a

$1.125 million verdict in an auto accident case against three of the

best defense lawyers in the state. The case was featured in a

previous edition of the Oregonian, and the press was at the trial

resulting in another story on the front page of the Oregonian the

following week. According to Jury Verdicts Northwest, this verdict

is the 4th largest auto accident verdict in Multnomah County going

back to the start of statistics in 1988. Of the other three cases

with larger verdicts, two of the plaintiffs were dead, and the third

had a severe brain injury, an amputation, and other serious injuries.

The $1.125 million verdict follows a string of substantial outcomes

for in the past six months, including a $367,000 trial verdict,

an $800,000 settlement, a $305,000 settlement, a confidential

settlement during the third week of a trial in March, and then this

latest verdict. These cases have come from a variety of sources

including D.C.s, M.D.s, medical specialists, the Brain Injury

Association of Oregon, and other lawyers. What is maybe most

remarkable is that with so few lawyers actually going to trial in

personal injury cases (only ~100 civil trials occur each year in

Multnomah County, many of which involve business disputes), has

already done three trials between mid-December and early July, each

two weeks or greater in length. It is clear that when we commit to a

case, we will go to trial when the offer is not sufficient.

The verdict was followed by 's presentation for the American

Association of Justice annual convention on the topic of traumatic

Alar and Transverse ligament tears in Vancouver, BC last week.
