The rain may be ending, but the clean up continues. One problem you

want to avoid is mold in your home. 7Healthcast reporter Dr. Deanna

Lites explains.

Mold is a part of our environment and generally doesn't pose a

problem. But, in the right setting like a wet, moist environment,

spores can reproduce quickly and mold can form within 24 to 48

hours. And for some people it's a health hazard.

" People can be allergic to mold, it's one of the inhalants we test

for when we test for allergies in the air, " Dr. Lynda Kabbash,

Harvard Vanguard Allergist, said.

She says the symptoms of mold allergies are similar to hay fever.

" Stuffy nose, sneezing, sinus congestion, that's the most common

manifestation, " Dr. Kabbash said.

The most important way to avoid mold in your home is to remove all

wet materials and thoroughly clean and dry out your home. Some

experts recommend cleaning floors, counter tops and other non-porous

materials with a solution of one or two cups bleach to a gallon of

water.

" But the mold will come back unless you've dried out the

atmosphere, " warns Dr Kabbash.

And when your clean up is complete, you'll still want to keep an eye

out for any visible signs of mold or moldy odors. There are also

professionals that you can hire to help clean up the mold.
