Guest guest
How tall are you? I forgot. The most important thing to remember is that body fat readings are only estimates. They can be fairly wildly goofy. The 140 pounds of lean mass isn't all muscle. It's your bones, organs, skin, hair, teeth, WATER and anything else that isn't body fat. You could change body fat testing methods, get a haircut, and lose some water weight and your lean mass might suddenly be 10 pounds lower than what you're looking at right now. It wouldn't mean you'd lost muscle. By the same token, you could eat half of a deep dish meat lovers pizza, gain 8 pounds of water from all the sodium and carbs, and have that show up as new lean mass even though you haven't actually gained any muscle. Instead of putting all your emphasis on the numbers, you have to go by how you look and feel. On Wed, 29 Dec 2004 23:00:36 -0000, <goheen@...> wrote: > > > Okay... Guest guest
, I am 5'4 " .... I feel absolutely wonderful.... I don't think I have ever felt this good in my life... As far as the way I look... well.... according to everyone I look great... to me (well most of the time) I still see the almost 300 lb person I was just a few short (almost 29) months ago... I know it is all a mind game... I am working on that as we speak... Thanks for replying... I do need to forget (or not put as much emphasis on them) numbers and just go on living life and working towards betterness... Betterness??? Is that a word?!? LOL... Anyway thanks again! Guest guest
Keep on trucking. Stay motivated. The changes will come! Also, if you think your lagging behind, check your workouts. Go over your diet and see if there are some things that need fixing. > i can never get that calculator to work-it's the one in Excell, right? hmm. did you take starting measurements? i find clothes are a good indicator, although i'm freaking out because i'm almost at the end of week 4, i haven't been on a scale in 2 weeks because i'm scared of what the number will say, and i don't feel much different (not to knock the healthy feeling of exercising every day!) > *~sarah > > fat loss/muscle gain > > > I have a question about the fat loss vs muscle gain calculator. Guest guest
Here's something I've posted before about body fat and lean mass: ~~ 1) You've developed a lot of lean mass to support your extra body weight. As your weight drops, that added muscle will start feeling unneeded and unloved. Some of it will pack up and leave. 2) All body fat readings (except for autopsy) are only estimates, and the higher your percentage of body fat, the more wildly inaccurate they are. If your readings are more than 25-30%, take the fat weight vs. lean weight numbers with a HUGE grain of salt. As you get leaner, both of those numbers will drop and become more accurate. 3) Lean body mass isn't just muscle. It's everything on your body that's not fat. It's bone, teeth, internal organs, skin, and (pay attention here...) WATER!!! You're going to be retaining a lot more water at 200+ pounds than when you get down to 135 and have been eating clean and training your guts out for 9 or 10 months. If you have a lot of fat to lose, it's entirely possible to drop 10-15 pounds of water weight along the way. Technically, that water qualifies as " lean mass " ... but it's not muscle, and you're better off without it. So, don't sweat it if your lean mass drops (it will), and don't worry that you're still going to weigh 190 lbs at 20% body fat (you won't). ~~ Basically, keep doing what you know works and don't worry too much about the numbers on calculator. They're just estimates, and they'll straighten themselves out as you get closer to your goal.
