Guest guest
The following is an alert from the labor rep to the " workers " about what will be happening in less than 24 hours at DTW. A little over a year ago we evacuated the tower during a terrible snow storm -- due to botched remediation. A year ago May I was not warned nor properly protected during ceiling tile removal up in the control tower cab during a mid shift -- what I like to call " their nightime raids " . Two months later I had 55% lung capacity along with +++++++++++++++ Enjoy your connection through Detroit. (authors names avialable upon request) Dave All, This Tuesday evening the Agency will begin a cleaning process of the mold in the elevator shaft. The contractors will be utilizing Palmolive and Dawn dish detergent, water and a hepa vacuum. Email exchanges with management to voice NATCA's concerns over the proper manner in which to deal with the mold have fallen on ignorant and deaf ears. We have told management that soaps are food for the mold and will only exacerbate the problem. We told them that industry standards state that the appropriate response to the presence of visible fungal growth on porous materials is removal of the material. We told them that wiping the mold down was not the proper method for gypsum board among other serious problems with the plan. We requested that the Agency utilize air scrubbers and if they were not willing to pay for the use that NATCA would. This was denied. We requested that the elevator doors be sealed. This was denied with the response that this would take to long to accomplish. We asked the work to be conducted in a negative air environment. This would help avoid the spreading of the spores. This was denied. We were asking for protections that would at least mitigate the amount of spores we are going to be exposed to due to the improper manner the Agency has decided to move forth. The contractor has met all agency requirements necessary to deem them qualified to do this work and at this point there exist no valid reason to question their performance. These two statements were received from the Agency when I provided them with an article that was written by the senior project manager that is responsible for our situation that is to begin this Tuesday evening. The article not only states the proper manner in which to deal with indoor mold issues, it also addresses what not to do with mold found indoors. When you compare the work order for this Tuesday evening with this article it makes you wonder why a senior project manager responsible for the remediation project at the tower write such an article on fungal assessment and remediation then present a work plan for the tower that contradicts her own article. The second part of the statement above that there exist no valid reason to question their performance.................I guess our health issues do not count. I have filed ethics charges against the four certified industrial hygienists for not following the ethics set forth by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. CIH's are responsible for the work plans that have been utilized over the last 18 months at DTW. The agency states that the mold in the tower shaft is on the surface ... and is not active. The part about being on the surface is false and misleading. Not only is it on the surface, but it is on the exterior walls of the elevator shaft and on the interior walls of the adjoining rooms. The fact that it is not active is also misleading. The toxins have the same effect whether actively growing or not. What does it need to grow? Water and food. What are they doing on Tuesday? Giving it just that. I could go on for quite a few more pages, but I will not. The people working the mid starting Tuesday night and ending on Thursday morning need to take heed. The Agency is not going to protect us. I again highly recommend that everyone, if you are feeling ill after or during this process, to file a CA1 and CA2 if you are working the mid or not. This will protect you short term and long term. I have numbers to specialists that are experts in this field. Please do not hesitate call me if you have any questions. I will have them answered. --------------------------------- Blab-away for as little as 1¢/min. Make PC-to-Phone Calls using Messenger with Voice.
