Yes the next 6 months could be very interesting. I would love all PCTs to stop immediately the slash and burn tactics many have been perusing and start increasing the numbers of HVs. I know that this is difficult as many are advertising and not getting any response.

Interestingly where band 7 HV posts are being advertised there does not seem to be quite the same recruitment difficulties. There is a clear message there I feel. The inequality over banding needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency if the govt are serious about recurring more HVs and attracting HVs back into the profession.

Hi Maggie,

It's great to see all this support for health visiting it will help to raise morale and hopefully start PCTs thinking about how to be more creative in attracting applicants for the many vacant HV posts. I think the banding issue is very important not only for attracting health visitors already trained but particularly for attracting the suitable applicants for HV training. In the past the 'F' grade staff nurses and junior sisters wanted to apply to become 'G' grade community health visitors. 'F' grade nurses came often with wide experience. Now those who are Band 5 (i.e. newly qualified) apply in the hope of becoming a Band 6 and so the experience is often lacking. If we were all Band 7 then we would be recruiting from a more experienced pool of nurses.

It opens up the whole debate about what experience is really needed prior to health visitor education and training and what that education and training should look like. As you have pointed out there are now many other people working in the community in 'parenting practitioner' roles who would in fact make good health visitors given more education and training.

It's a good point, . One of the points for the CNO's review

ought to consider is access to health visiting from other trades

regulator which could set and maintain effective criteria for

Yes, (and same for school nurses with public health roles!) -

this is why it is critical to work alongside the Children's Workforce Development Council, who are developing training and 'integrated' working for Youth Workers, Nursery Nurses, Family Support Workers, Early Years Professionals and other potential recruits to health visiting functions. If non-nurses are recruited to HV/SN training, we need to know who the child-friendly practitioners are, and what previous learning experiences they have had....
