On another (base)note, I was sort of dismayed to see on the

Basenotes site that they're producing sandalwood-scented postage

stamps in India. I thought, what a sad waste of an endangered

wood. Then I thought maybe it's synthetic, or made from the

leaves. I hope so.

I saw that too and was very puzzled. You would think that the government at

least would be aware of the sandalwood situation?!....... but I guess not?

Unless as you have proposed it may be a synth....
