Guest guest
Here's my blog entry on it this morning: ~~ Ok, I watched The Biggest Loser last night and I was enthralled. I especially like the fact that the two trainers have very different coaching philosophies. Naturally, I'm pulling for the red team with Evil Jillian the size 2 demon from hell in charge. When I workout with my trainer I expect to get yelled at, badgered, bullied, and beaten into the floor from one end of the gym to the other. I thrive on that. I wasn't as impressed with Friendly Bob's " let's all hold hands and sing songs and talk about our feelings " approach. Although, I will admit that he scored some major points with me when his people were throwing up in the bushes. Obviously he's pushing them pretty damn hard; he's just nicer about it. Like, " let's all hold hands and sing songs and get motivated to puke our guts out. " LOL Somebody was asking me how it's even possible for these people to be losing 10-20 pounds the first week. Well, the human body is mostly water. Muscle tissue is the most watery. It's like 75% water. Under extreme conditions the water and muscle go first. There's no fat burning required to drop massive amounts of scale weight quickly. The more you weigh, the more staggering the drop can be. Even a healthy race car driver at an ideal weight drops 6-12 pounds during a three or four hour race. Even I've gotten crushed and dehydrated at rock concerts and come home 7 pounds lighter. :-) So, if these large, out-of-shape people suddenly slash their calories and make working out their full time job, fat (and water and muscle) will start flying off of them. They probably are losing muscle at first, but that's not necessarily bad. As you get smaller, you don't need the same kind of muscle mass as someone carrying an extra 200 pounds around with them all day. Think about picking up a 100-200 pound barbell and taking that with you everywhere you go. You'd need some SERIOUS muscle mass. Put the barbell down (or lose the fat) and you don't need quite so much. They did dunk all of those people. So when it's over we should be able to find out what happened to their lean mass and percentage of body fat. I loved the giant buffet table loaded with what each contestant used to eat in a day. It had french fries, fried chicken, spaghetti, donuts, bacon and eggs, pizza, chocolate cake, burgers, you name it. And by each heap of food was the contestant's name, like they'd read everyone's pre-contest food diary and just plunked down an entire day's worth of the high-calorie garbage they used to eat. Everybody was stunned and grossed out. My favorite comment was from the woman who went, OMG, I'm 5 feet tall. I don't need to eat all that! Anyway, it was good fun, and my red team won this week. :-) ~~ NBC Weight Loss Show Just wondering is anyone caught that weight loss show last night? Anyone have any thoughts on it? I thought that they were losing an awful lot of weight their first week and working out way too much. Just wanted to here some comments on it from the veterans here. )
Guest guest
I could not make it past 5 minutes on this show. I might try it again to see what happens, but I cannot stand those reality type shows where it's clear part of the production includes getting people to bicker. It will be interesting to see which team wins though. Isn't the premise that one team is going to lose weight by eating less and one team is going to eat more, or something like that...Anyhoo, I enjoyed reading your summary of the show!!! ) > Here's my blog entry on it this morning: > > ~~ > Ok, I watched The Biggest Loser last night and I was enthralled. Guest guest
Thanks for sending that out. I knew most of what they lost was water weight..but I was like...22 pounds in one week, there is no way! I honestly thought the show was making the weight they lost look good to the viewers..but I guess it is possible. Hey , I have a question for you. I am starting BFL for a second time and this week I am really just focusing on the eating and am going to start exercising next week. I really need to catch up on some sleep before I start, I am just exhausted and don't want to get worse. Anyways, I know that getting that ripped muscle look is more the way you eat than the exercise you do so my question is, what happens when you eat the BFL way and don't exercise? Will I gain weight or just stay the same? I am considered one of those skinny-fat people, 120lbs and 5'4 " , don't need to lose weight, just lose bodyfat and firm up. Thanks! They both mentioned lowering carbs and calories as well as other things I can't remember at the moment. Colleen
Guest guest
- I thought the same thing about the amount of weight they lost! With the 2 " smallest losers " losing *only* about 5 lbs in one week and that being seen as " less than " results, it is no wonder it is hard to make people understand that slow and steady does it. Five pounds in one week is A LOT! I had a very mini freak out yesterday feeling that it was " going fast enough " even before seeing the show! Luckily I got control of that before it took over :-) Kathy _____ From: and [mailto:ctheilac@...] Sent: Wednesday, 20 October, 2004 12:17 PM Subject: NBC Weight Loss Show Just wondering is anyone caught that weight loss show last night? Guest guest
If you're eating BFL meals at a slight calorie deficit you'll continue to lose fat whether you're exercising or not. And obviously, if you're meeting your calorie needs you'll stay the same, and if you're eating more than you need you'll gain. So, if you're only doing the eating this week, just pay attention to your hunger level. If you get hungry and need to eat every 2-3 hours you'll know your portions are right. Don't stuff yourself and don't walk around starving. If you're not exercising, you may need smaller or less calorie-dense portions or one less meal per day. Go by how you're feeling and you should be able to hold your weight pretty steady while getting the food routine down. RE: NBC Weight Loss Show Thanks for sending that out. Guest guest
I thought the same thing - It's just not possible to lose 22lbs in one week! Sorry!! Well maybe all water weight but not FAT!! I just sat there shaking my head at it! > Just wondering is anyone caught that weight loss show last night? Anyone > have any thoughts on it? Guest guest
Thanks for the info. I just wanted to make sure that I will not gain weight by eating the 6 meals a day if I was not exercising.
