Guest guest
I'm here. I finally got the *official* okay from my GYN to return to " normal activities as tolerated " after having a total abdominal hysterectomy in November. It has been a long recovery period. First my incision got infected with MRSA; a penicillin-resistant staph infection. I had to try three different antibiotics before finding one with side-effects I could tolerate and that the infection was suseptible to. No sooner did the MRSA clear up, then I woke up one morning with a temp of 104. I went to the ER and was diagnosed with a kidney infection. I was hospitalized for four days, then on oral antibiotics for a week after that. Lately, my GP has been talking about decreasing my narcotic pain-relievers; we both know that completely eliminating the narcotic isn't going to happen; I have hydrocephalus with related slit-ventricle syndrome, and every time there is a major shift in the weather, I get a major headache that is only helped by Vicodin (barometric pressure changes and temperature fluctuations are the main headache triggers). I also have chronic back pain as a result of the number of spine surgeries I have had to have( I have had 6, with 5 of those being related to treating scoliosis and problems with the rods placed to treat the scoliosis). My GP is hesitant to allow me to continue using the Vicodin for my back pain. Unfortunately, I haven't found any doctor yet who can explain the pain, let alone if there's anything that can be done about it. I went to the orthopedic doctor at my Spina Bifida clinic today, but unfortunately, he has no experience in the treatment of scoliosis or related problems. He wants me to see the doctor who did my last spine surgery, which I'll do (I don't want to, but I will). My fear is that I'll be told I need another spine surgery, and to be honest I'm not sure I can do it again. After six spine surgeries, I'm pretty sure that the build-up of scar tissue is a huge factor in my pain. They can do surgery to remove scar tissue, but the surgery to remove it would cause more scar tissue formation, so it's basically a catch-22. I can understand my GPs hesitancy in allowing me to continue the use of narcotic pain medicine due to the high risk of addiction, but I've always been careful not to go over the acceptable daily dosage, and if I don't take the medicine, I can't be as active as I like to be. I'm not even that active, but I volunteer for the local sexual assault center as an advocate on the crisis line, and I also volunteer at the local Boys & Girls Club as a homework assistant in the Learning Center. Without the pain medicine, the amount of pain I'm in makes it difficult to concentrate on these activities, and I've had to stop volunteering as a result. It's really starting to get me down. Sorry for the long post. Guess I needed to vent more than I realized.-- Tracey White (tracey.white@...)Life Partner to PiskurCo-parent/co-trainer to Buddy the Wonder Puppy, Physical Assistance/Psychiatric Service-Dog-In-Training; and Pitter (AKA: Issue Kitty)
