It is definitely very rare for me to find a synthetic

perfume that I like to wear. I don't really get the

talc thing but they are so strong and overpowering and

they rarely seem to resemble the notes that they claim

to include. Also, they give me headaches and asthma

so...

A great beginner's book is Essence and Alchemy by

Mandy Aftel. It's a fun read and very informative and

she includes some really nice formulas for her own

perfumes that you can create yourself. Enjoy!

Hi , and welcome to the group. You have come to the right

place to get answers from very knowledgeable and experienced

perfumers, as well as from relative newcomers like me.

I do have the same problem with synths. I believe that you will find

natural essences will behave in a unique and beautiful way. You will

spend the rest of your life getting to know the nuances and

complexities of natural essences, and I believe you will find your

greatest satisfaction in learning how to coax a new tone from a

familiar note, or in discovering that two unlikely essences work

together on you in unexpected and entirely wonderful ways.

Mandy Aftel's Essences and Alchemy: A Book of Perfumery is a good

book with which to start. Some perfumers disagree with her

techniques, but there is no right and wrong, simply that which works

for you and that which doesn't. If you never use her advice, you

will still do well. I do follow her methods, more or less, and I am

happy with the results.

To really understand scents, though, you must find Stefen Arctander's

two books. He describes the nuances of natural essences, and how

they work together (or not), better than anyone else I've ever read.

I think his books should be required reading for all perfumers, if

for no other reason than to learn how to think about your experience

of scents in a rational, scientific way. It sounds almost counter-

intuitive, but you will understand once you've read him.

His books are self-published, so you probably can't order them at

your local bookstore ( & Noble couldn't find them for me). Our

public library did not have them, but I did find both at our

university library. You may have to search a bit, but they are well

worth the effort.

Yes, I think I will be spending a lot of time with natural oils. I

have noticed already how much my sense of smell has improved, just

from playing with 5 or so of them for just over a year! Many, many

more to go.

Thanks for the link to the book, have to say you are absolutely right,

$900 is just way too far out of my league and will be for a long time!

I will stick with floundering in the kiddy pool for a while

Hi Becky, all:

Arctander has a three-volume set, and only the first volume is

strictly on naturals. Mark, a member of this group, called

Allured last year and convinced them to separate out the naturals

volume because all three cost $900 and we didn't need the other two.

They complied, sales went up 15% and they're now members of the Guild

and very supportive of NP ;-) Such is the power of one person, ,

and the buying power of this group.
