Odd that some would carry it and not others. Oh, but I forget that liquor isn't controlled by the state in the same way that it is in WA. I always get such a kick out of seeing it for sale in grocery stores when I visit CA. Just cracks me up -- I guess the way folks from dry counties react to places that sell booze at all. My cousins are in CA right now, visiting their folks. Does anyone know of anyplace in the SF/Oakland area or even out to SLO that sells Everclear? BTW, I paid $80 for four fifths of it when it came from Montana. Also, I've tried to use 105-proof vodka, but it just doesn't cut it (literally). Thanks! So....100 proof anything, is still only 50% ethanol....the balance being water and congeners (SP?)....such as they are.... And 150 Proof Everclear is only a 75% alcohol..... A number of EO and absolute will not dissolve entirely in this percentage of ethanol.....but a number maybe will.... In fact....some absolutes don't seem to ever dissolve in anything...<G>... Everclear is also made in a 95%....or *190* proof version..... This works better..... In WI, I have been lucky enough to find 190 proof (aka 95%) Vodka.....And recently, came across the 95% Everclear for the first time.... The Everclear seems harsher than the vodkas.... Somewhere else, someone suggested a Brita filter for the Everclear......I suspect any activated charcoal filtering would help tame it down....I don't know if Brita uses a charcoal based system.... Everclear and most Very High Proof (95%) liquor store vodkas are grain based..... Yeah....I know it's a work around from using perfumer's alcohol..... -- W. Anyway, I'll check our local BevMo here, have one just up the street a couple of miles. I've checked a few liqueur stores in the area and no one that I've asked carries it. Thanks for the tip. Guest guest
I bought it at the corner of Telegraph and Ashby at the local Liquor store. The salesman was a perfumer from Trinidad. This past week, Patty, my mod, was nice enough to snap some photos of the apartment complex I lived in and managed (hippie chick, 21, managing an apt. complex! Oh, yea, that was Bezerkeley) and I was shocked how it had gone downhill. It was just blocks from Telegraph and Ashby, near Shattuck and Dwight. That place should be all middle-class and nice now, and it looks ghetto, I was really stunned. It looked beautiful when I managed it, full of fragrant pineapple guava, conifers, rosemary, etc., etc. I married a guy named " Zap " , that's how Bezerkeley I was, lol. Still friends, although divorced, and I hesitate to send him the photos, he'll be saddened, too. Before Bezerkeley, I lived in Mill Valley and SF, and liked B-town best because it was warmer and more fun. We were always on Telegraph Ave, in the used record store Pellucidor around the corner, hitching over to SF and Marin for parties and concerts. I was a music journalist, so we were at practically every concert that mattered to us. Van on always played at a little club on University, I think it was. Yes, fun times. Sometimes I use 151 proof grain alcohol from the liquor store to tincture very aromatic materials, knowing that the little bit of that I add won't cloud the perfume, but you need 190 proof to have a clear perfume. If you want to experimet at first with the cheaper 150 proof, you'll have cloudy perfume, and it will be a bit weaker than the 190 stuff. Also, if you want to sell it or give it as gifts, you'll have to bottle it in a frosted or opaque bottle because of the way it looks. Also, you need 190 to dissolve many concretes, absolutes, or resins. It'll work, if you don't mind cloudy perfume, and don't want to really dissolve concretes, absolutes and resins. You really need the 190 proof stuff for perfumery. There are several producers of organic 190 proof alcohol in California, and one in Oregon. I suggest springing for the potent stuff. Bourbonais > L'Hermite Aromatique Hello and All, Just to clear it up from my end... (it's now sounding to me like there may be more than one strength of Everclear?) The stuff I have is 95% alcohol, 190-proof. And if BevMo carries that, and if my cousins can bring it with them on the plane (which I'm seriously doubting, even in cargo), then I may have another quick source. Otherwise, maybe I'll have to look into the cost of a road trip to OR, 'cause I think Homeland Insanity is down on shipping alcohol just now. I get asked if I'm shipping alcohol every time I mail something from the post office here. But maybe it's just because I live in WA, the home of the Millennium Bombers... <snort> Cheers!
