I've had a lot of those side effects, and so have most of the people who

have taken it. But mold toxicity is FAR WORSE...

Why do you care so much about this?

Someone said that they didn't believe complaints about cholestyramine

were founded. For me vomiting was very bad, so I couldn't take it and

that is a big deal to me, since I took the big trip to see Dr Shoe and

was hoping to treat my symptoms with CSM. In earlier searches I had

done on CSM did not see vomiting but nausea so I was wondering myself,

and anything I'm wondering about, someone else might be too. That's

what the group experience is supposed to be all about, sharing

experiences, and information we find.

I have the kind that is sweetened so perhaps the sorbitol. I have

become sensitive to so many things, but I suspect the tiny insoluable

fibers are irritating to my GI system which I am having trouble with

right now.

I have taken CSM for over 2 yrs. and have been very fortunate with no

serious side effects at all. At first I had some heartburn, belching, and

constipation but only for a short time. I was so sick I thought I was dying

but I

took it and NEVER missed a dose. I slowly began to feel better and take it now,

only, as a maintenance dose unless I get re exposed then it's 4X a day for a

week. I wish everyone could have the same success!!!!!!!!

Sue

Someone said they wondered if people were dissing Cholestyramine had

an agenda, so found this. Apparently it is usually well tolerated

but some people do have problems with it and here are some side

effects. Listed amoung them includes vomiting which was my problem

and it is listed oddly enough under 'rare' and also under 'common'.

Don't want to harp on this but just shed some light:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/uspdi/202137.html#SXX18

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side

effects occur:

Rare

Black, tarry stools; stomach pain (severe) with nausea and

vomiting

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following

side effects occur:

More common

Constipation

Rare

Loss of weight (sudden)

Other side effects may occur that usually do not need medical

attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your

body adjusts to the medicine. However, check with your doctor if any

of the following side effects continue or are bothersome:

More common

Heartburn or indigestion; nausea or vomiting; stomach pain

Less common

Belching; bloating; diarrhea; dizziness; headache

Other side effects not listed above may also occur in some patients.

If you notice any other effects, check with your doctor

My experience has been a bit less uneventful, unfortunately.

For me, it seems as if cholestyramine dramatically lessens the amount

of time that I have the symptoms, but my symptoms at times get fairly severe

even now post-exposure..

But without CSM, I know that I would be in much worse shape. I was really

sick before I found it,

and if I stop taking it the symptoms come back very fast with even the

slightest exposure.

Now, I think that I still have a lot of toxins stored in my body, either

that

or I am so sensitive that I am reacting to my environment now.

not surprising given that I was in the mold apt. for a long time.

Sue,

Do you think these symptoms from Cholestyramine (which sound quite similar

to the symptoms when one first takes antifungals) are a result of " die off " or

herxheimers reaction?

Sharon and Sue, my own theory on side effects is this: CSM is made

up of tiny insoluable fibers. For people who may have sensitive gut

due to Candidas or fungal overgrowth, digestive upset would be

reasonable as many insoluable fibers would irritate, already

irritated GI and gut. That accounts for most of side effects

described. The black tarry stools could be for people would have

ulcers, which constant onslaught of tiny insoluable fibers could

irritate to bleed. Black tarry stools generally are a sign of

bleeding in upper digestive tract, so in my case I think I need

treatment GI tract first before I can tolerate cholestyramine.

Other symptoms such as constipation we know is due to the binding

and drinking more water may releive that. The loss of weight could

be due to people taking it too close to meals and it affecting the

absorption of nutrients from meals, or could be those who are

throwing up of course, and is listed as rare anyway. Headaches, is

listed as less common also, but could be caused by any of the things

listed before that, loss of electrolytes in vomiting, loss of

nutrients, if taken too close to meals, etc.

People who are able to tolerate, may have less GI disturbance,

infection in sinuses or lungs, but not GI, etc. This is my guess but

it would line up with side effects listed perfectly.

I honestly don't know but many people I've talked to have the symptoms

mentioned below. I think it's the body reacting to the poison leaving your

body.

For example I have heard MANY people describe the black, tarry stools. I had

the same for about 2 weeks and I believe it's from the toxins being removed.

None of us gets poisoned overnight it's over a period of time & your system

is slowly dying. When you start taking medication to rid the toxins your body

has a big adjustment to make.I remember feeling worse before feeling better.

I slept for hours and hours and was mostly resting for months.

Barb, I had colitis & intestinal problems about 2 yrs. before finding out

what was wrong but wasn't having any when I first started the CSM. The black

stools only lasted for about 3 weeks and then went away. No more intestinal

problems in over 2 yrs. This illness is different with everyone and makes people

sick in so many different ways. Sure would be a lot easier if everyone had

the same symptoms!!

Sharon and Sue, Excuse me. I see in Dr Shoemaker's book he mentions

CSM and Herx reaction. I didn't have time to read but apparently some

of the reactions to CSM he believes to be Herx. He treats them

apparently with Actos. However I don't see any symptoms mentioned

like ones below. He mentions brain fog and muscle aches, fatigue,

headaches but maybe. I don't think mine were as I am having trouble

with a lot of things I take in, food and supplements and medicines.

When I told him about the nausea, vomiting, he did not Rx Actos but

told me to cut back on the CSM dose.
